Two Types of Liquid Phase Separation Induced by Soft Centrifugation in Aqueous Ethyl Acetate Using Ethanol as Cosolvent

Helmut Coelfen et al.

Summary: Water/ethyl acetate/ethanol is a commonly used green extractant system. Through centrifugation, two different types of phase separation, centrifuge-induced criticality and centrifuge-induced emulsification, can be observed in this ternary system utilizing ethanol as a cosolvent. The expected composition profiles of samples after centrifugation can be accurately predicted using a phenomenological theory of mixing. These findings demonstrate the potential of centrifugal separation even at low centrifugation speeds for molecules with larger apparent molar masses.

Novel green production of natural-like vanilla extract from curcuminoids

Evamaria Hofmann et al.

Summary: The demand for natural vanilla extract, specifically vanillin, is much higher than current production due to the labor-intensive process of vanilla bean cultivation and vanillin extraction. To meet this demand, most vanillin used today is synthetically produced, contrary to the trend towards bio-based products. This study focuses on synthesizing nature-based vanillin from the more accessible rhizomes of Curcuma longa, which also produces vanillic acid and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde found in natural vanilla beans. Visible light and food-grade chemicals are utilized for the extraction and conversion of curcuminoids to flavors. The use of a binary mixture of ethanol and triacetin, as well as a surfactant-free microemulsion consisting of water, ethanol, and triacetin, achieves extraction results exceeding those reported in the literature for Soxhlet extraction of vanilla beans by a factor of more than 7.

Nanoscopic microheterogeneities or pseudo-phase in non-conventional

Jonas Blahnik et al.

Summary: This article discusses new concepts in macroscopically monophasic colloidal systems, where entropy plays a major role in subtle interactions and structuring. It explores the formation of microemulsion-like structures using hydrotropes and the interactions between cationic and anionic surfactants. Additionally, the article considers the possibility of water-free direct microemulsions with only charged surfactants and oil due to the increase in size of hydrophilic headgroups.

A novel surfactant-free microemulsion system for the synthesis of poly (methyl methacrylate)/Ag nanocomposite

Behnia Sadat Mirhoseini et al.

Summary: Surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs) formed without traditional surfactants show potential applications but limited understanding. A new SFME system was reported for synthesizing polymer-based nanocomposites, showing promising results. The method can potentially produce various well-defined nanocomposites without surfactants.

Theory of Ternary Fluids under Centrifugal Fields

Simon Stemplinger et al.

Summary: This work developed a theoretical description of ternary solutions of small molecules under a centrifugal field and introduced the centrifugation map (CMap) as a general tool to predict composition profiles in centrifugal fields of arbitrary strength. The theoretical formalism was based on classical density functional theory with established models for liquid mixtures, and thermodynamics provided a general criterion for apparent aggregation. The strength of the CMap approach was demonstrated in a ternary model system with ethanol as a co-solvent.

A novel synthesis of monodispersed bioactive glass nanoparticles via ultrasonic-assisted surfactant-free microemulsion approach

Yanbo Wu et al.

Summary: Nanoscale bioactive glasses were successfully synthesized with remarkable mono-dispersity and uniform spherical morphology using a surfactant-free microemulsion strategy combined with ultrasound irradiation. The bioactive glass nanoparticles demonstrated excellent apatite-forming activity, making them a promising candidate for local sustained delivery in bone tissue engineering.

Spontaneous Ouzo Emulsions Coexist with Pre-Ouzo Ultraflexible Microemulsions

Sylvain Prevost et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the spontaneous emulsions produced by dilution with water can be stable over days even without surfactants, polymers, or particles. The Ouzo effect, obtained by rapid dilution from an identified pre-Ouzo domain, involves weak aggregates and a surface layer enriched in a hydrotrope. Investigations show that when the emulsion is stable, coexisting phases are ternary solutions structured at the nanometer scale.
