Pore-scale visualization of hydrogen storage in a sandstone at subsurface pressure and temperature conditions: Trapping, dissolution and wettability

Zaid Jangda et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pore-scale displacement processes in H-2-brine systems in a porous sandstone. The findings suggest that underground H-2 storage may be a suitable strategy for energy storage, but further research is needed to fully understand the pore-scale interactions.

Long-Term Redistribution of Residual Gas Due to Non-convective Transport in the Aqueous Phase

Yaxin Li et al.

Summary: Geological CO2 sequestration is an effective way to permanently trap greenhouse gas emissions underground. In addition to convective mixing, non-convective transport plays a role in redistributing trapped CO2, with mechanisms such as molecular diffusion and sedimentation. Despite being slow, non-convective transport can cause localized accumulation and potentially remobilize trapped gas.

Summary: Interfacial tension (IFT) is an important property in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon geological storage (CGS), supporting the interpretation of multiphase flow and wetting behavior and facilitating reservoir simulation. This study investigates the effect of contrast agents on IFT using pendant-drop experiments and modeling, providing quantitative data on IFT between different phases and proposing a workflow for estimating IFT between gas, brine, and doped hydrocarbon systems.

Pore-network modeling of Ostwald ripening in porous media: How do trapped bubbles equilibrate?

Yashar Mehmani et al.

Summary: This article investigates the Ostwald ripening of trapped bubbles in porous media, which is relevant to subsurface and manufacturing applications. Through simulations and theoretical analysis, the article reveals the evolution process of the bubble size distribution from initially non-uniform to stable equilibrium, and finds that the equilibration of bubbles in heterogeneous porous media is slower than in homogeneous media.

A level set approach to Ostwald ripening of trapped gas bubbles in porous media

Deepak Singh et al.

Summary: Ostwald ripening of gas bubbles is a thermodynamic process for mass transfer that is important for foam enhanced oil recovery and geological CO2 storage. This study presents a methodology for simulating Ostwald ripening in different pore geometries and investigates the factors influencing the ripening process. The results show that gas type, compressibility factor, and local capillary pressure have significant impacts on the rate of mass transfer during ripening.

Ostwald ripening and gravitational equilibrium: Implications for long-term subsurface gas storage

Martin J. Blunt

Summary: This article analytically investigates the equilibrium configuration of gas and brine in a porous medium and the timescales to reach equilibrium. It shows that the nature of equilibrium is different when the gas is disconnected, and that diffusion through the aqueous phase maintains a capillary pressure gradient consistent with the thermodynamically-determined brine density. A transition zone forms in equilibrium with connected gas near the top of the formation, and the timescales to reach equilibrium are estimated to be millions of years.

A locally conservative multiphase level set method for capillary-controlled displacements in porous media

Espen Jettestuen et al.

Summary: A multiphase level set method with local volume conservation is proposed for capillary-controlled displacement in porous structures. The method preserves volumes of individual phase ganglia and predicts capillary pressures between ganglia and surrounding phases, handling ganglia breakup and coalescence effectively. Sequential and parallel algorithms are presented for the method, which is validated numerically for both two and three phase systems in both two and three spatial dimensions, handling merging and splitting of phase ganglia.

On the relationship between capillary pressure, saturation, and interfacial area for three-phase flow in water-wet porous media

Rebecca Paustian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationships between capillary pressure, saturation, and fluid-fluid interfacial area in water-wet three-phase flow systems. The findings show that hysteresis exists in the P-c-S-a relationships during drainage and imbibition cycles, as demonstrated by high-resolution 3D images captured by X-ray microtomography. The study also highlights that the P-c-S-a relationship is non-hysteretic for both the oil-water and air-oil fluid pairs, regardless of the initial water saturation at the point of air injection.

Pore-Scale Imaging and Analysis of Wettability Order, Trapping and Displacement in Three-Phase Flow in Porous Media with Various Wettabilities

Abdulla Alhosani et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the key pore-scale processes that control flow and trapping in a three-phase system, such as wettability order, spreading and wetting layers, and double/multiple displacement events, under capillary dominated conditions. Different pore-scale events are observed under near-miscible and immiscible conditions, depending on the wettability state. This study provides insights into the behavior of three-phase flow in porous media and highlights the importance of gas-oil miscibility and wettability in controlling flow and trapping mechanisms.

Capillarity and phase-mobility of a hydrocarbon gas-liquid system

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the nucleation and transport of gas coming out of solution in 3D rock, revealing complexities in gas mobility and bubble nucleation kinetics. Experimental observations suggest that critical gas saturations could be significantly below the typical percolation threshold of 20%. Diffusive transport under flow conditions plays a significant role in gas mobility, leading to compositional gradients and complex behavior in capillarity of gas-liquid hydrocarbon mixtures.
