Surface modification techniques of magnesium-based alloys for implant applications

Vinod Kumar Mahto et al.

Summary: Biodegradable materials like magnesium-based alloys are widely used for making implants due to their good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical properties similar to bone material. However, the high degradation rates and poor mechanical properties of magnesium alloys pose challenges to their use as implant materials. Various surface modification techniques, including surface coating, are used to control the degradation rates. This paper discusses the different types of surface coating techniques for magnesium-based alloys and explores the future scope of surface technology for magnesium-based implant materials.

Is crosslinked pectin a suitable material for efficient corrosion protective coatings? A study with AZ31 Mg alloy

Flavio de Sousa Santos et al.

Summary: This study investigated the properties of pectin coatings crosslinked with Ba2+ or Ca2+ ions on AZ31 magnesium alloy, and found that the coatings crosslinked with Ba2+ exhibited better swelling resistance and corrosion protection. These results indicate that pectin is a suitable polymer for preparing efficient, sustainable, and biodegradable coatings for magnesium alloys.

Recent progress of self-healing coatings for magnesium alloys protection

N. A. Johari et al.

Summary: Magnesium (Mg), as the lightest structural metal with compatible biological systems, has been widely used in improving vehicle fuel economy and biodegradable implants. However, the corrosion susceptibility of Mg has been a major concern. To enhance the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys, protective coatings with self-healing properties have been developed, which can release corrosion inhibitors or autonomously self-heal via stimulus controlled-release of embedded nanocontainers.

New relations between modification degree, swelling and impedance in anticorrosion chitosan-derivative coatings on magnesium alloy AZ31

Carlos Henrique Michelin Beraldo et al.

Summary: This study investigated environmentally friendly coatings of chitosan-derivatives with natural aldehydes for corrosion protection of magnesium AZ31 alloy. The derivatives were characterized using FTIR and UV-Vis, and the coated samples were analyzed using SEM, potentiodynamic polarization and EIS. The results showed that increased modification degree led to decreased corrosion current density and swelling degree, while impedance modulus increased. The relationship between |Z| and swelling with modification degree was proposed for the first time.

Corrosion inhibition potential of chitosan based Schiff bases: Design, performance and applications

Chandrabhan Verma et al.

Summary: Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine linked together via beta-1,4-glycosidic linkage. Due to increasing ecological awareness, it is considered an ideal environmentally sustainable alternative. While unmodified chitosan itself is not highly effective in aqueous phase corrosion inhibition, chemically modified derivatives like CSBs show remarkable solubility in electrolytes. Chelation adsorption of CSBs has been discussed as a mechanism for aqueous phase corrosion inhibition.

Corrosion protection properties of an environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol coating reinforced by a heating treatment and lignin nanocellulose

Junbo Zhang et al.

Summary: The heating treatment induced an elimination reaction between hydroxyl groups, reducing water transport channels formed by intermolecular forces. Lignin nanocellulose acted as an effective barrier against corrosive media penetration. The synergistic effects of heating treatment and lignin nanocellulose addition greatly improved the corrosion resistance of the composite coating.
