Epigenome-wide meta-analysis of BMI in nine cohorts: Examining the utility of epigenetically predicted BMI

Whitney L. Do et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between DNA methylation, body mass index (BMI), and metabolic health. The researchers collected data from multiple studies and found a significant association between BMI and CpG sites. They also identified specific CpG sites that interacted with BMI based on race and ethnicity. Additionally, they developed a model that could predict BMI using DNA methylation data and found that individuals with high epigenetic BMI had poorer metabolic health, while those with low epigenetic BMI had better metabolic health.

Successful treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder reverses DNA methylation marks

Christiaan H. Vinkers et al.

Summary: This study showed that successful treatment of PTSD is associated with significant changes in DNA methylation of certain genes, such as ZFP57. The longitudinal evidence suggests that ZFP57 methylation plays a role in both the development and successful treatment of deployment-related PTSD.

Nutrition as a Key Modifiable Factor for Periodontitis and Main Chronic Diseases

Prescilla Martinon et al.

Summary: Nutrition plays a crucial role in preventing chronic diseases, including periodontal disease. High intake of sugar, saturated fat, low fiber, among other nutrients, increases the risk of periodontal diseases, while a diet low in sugar and high in fiber helps reduce this risk.

ZNF718, HOXA4, and ZFP57 are differentially methylated in periodontitis in comparison with periodontal health: Epigenome-wide DNA methylation pilot study

Hernan G. Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in DNA methylation patterns in peripheral leukocytes between periodontitis patients and healthy controls, identifying new periodontitis-related genes (ZNF718, HOXA4, and ZFP57). Functional enrichment analysis revealed immune-related ontologies, suggesting the relevance of studying leukocytes' DNA methylome for interpreting systemic immune-related epigenetic patterns in periodontitis.

DNA Methylation and Expression Profiles of Whole Blood in Parkinson's Disease

Adrienne R. Henderson et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common age-related neurodegenerative disease, diagnosed at advanced stages by motor deficits. Aberrant epigenetic modifications are detectable in blood and our study found differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and methylated regions (DMRs) in PD patients compared to healthy controls. Identified patterns of altered disease-specific DNA methylation and associated gene expression in whole blood provide a foundation for potential PD biomarkers.

Differential DNA methylation and mRNA transcription in gingival tissues in periodontal health and disease

Hyunjin Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigated differential DNA methylation in gingival tissues in periodontal health, gingivitis, and periodontitis, and its association with differential mRNA expression. The concomitant study of DNA methylation and gene expression patterns may identify genes whose expression is epigenetically regulated in periodontitis.

Summary: The ARIC project, initiated in 1987, focuses on community-based surveillance for myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease, aiming to understand the decline in CHD mortality and identify determinants of subclinical atherosclerosis and CHD in middle-aged Black and White adults. Through research in areas such as health disparities, genomics, heart failure, and prevention, ARIC has published over 2,300 papers with significant clinical impact, highlighting the importance of population-based research in improving health.
