Treatment response in newly diagnosed epilepsy: a syndromic approach

Ali A. Asadi-Pooya et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the seizure outcome and associated factors in patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy using a syndromic approach. The results showed that approximately 52.7% of patients were seizure-free for at least one year after the first treatment plan. Drug-resistance was higher in patients with focal epilepsy and symptomatic generalized epilepsy. Implementation of appropriate personalized treatment plans is crucial for patients with epilepsy.

Shared genetics and causality underlying epilepsy and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

Yong Wu et al.

Summary: This study suggests a genetic correlation between ADHD and epilepsy, which may be due to the fact that they share common pathogenic sites and tissue origin.

Low recognition of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adult patients admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

Caitlynn Pham et al.

Summary: This study suggests that ADHD is underrecognized and underdiagnosed in patients presenting to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, and screening tools may be useful to help clinicians address seizure comorbidities such as ADHD.

High Yield of Screening for ADHD in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

Corrinne Dunbar et al.

Summary: ADHD is common in patients with epilepsy, with a higher proportion in patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures compared to epileptic seizures. Positive ASRS screens did not show a significant association with positive CPT screens in this population. Adult patients admitted to the EMU are at a high risk of comorbid attention deficits.

Brain functional connectivity in individuals with psychogenic non epileptic seizures (PNES): An application of graph theory

Saba Amiri et al.

Summary: The study using graph theory found alterations in brain functional connectivity in individuals with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, with some regions showing hyper-connectivity and others hypoconnectivity. These findings suggest potential roles of different brain regions in emotion processing and movement regulation in individuals with PNES.

Methylphenidate for attention problems in epilepsy patients: Safety and efficacy

Beth A. Leeman-Markowski et al.

Summary: Children with ADHD are at increased risk of seizures, while children with epilepsy have a higher prevalence of ADHD. Currently, there are no approved medications for epilepsy-related attentional dysfunction, but methylphenidate (MPH) may be a possible treatment option. More large-scale studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of MPH in treating attentional dysfunction due to epilepsy.

The prevalence of adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: A global systematic review and meta-analysis

Peige Song et al.

Summary: This study provides an up-to-date estimation of the global prevalence of both persistent and symptomatic adult ADHD, showing that the prevalence decreases with advancing age. Large-scale investigations and a well-defined strategy for diagnosing adult ADHD are needed.

Effective connectivity between emotional and motor brain regions in people with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES)

Saba Amiri et al.

Summary: The study found that in patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, emotion-processing regions have inhibitory effects on executive control areas and motor regions. These findings may provide further insight into the influence of emotional arousal on functional movements and the underlying mechanisms of involuntary movements during functional seizures.
