Primary aldosteronism in pregnancy

Vittorio Forestiero et al.

Summary: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most common form of secondary hypertension, but there are few cases diagnosed during the peri-partum period. Diagnosis of PA during pregnancy is challenging and treatment options are limited due to medication contraindications. Eplerenone has been proven to be a safe and effective treatment option during pregnancy.

Assessment of the workload and financial burden of Bosniak IIF renal cyst surveillance in a tertiary referral hospital

Orla Cullivan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the economic and workload burden of diagnosing and following up Bosniak IIf renal cysts on the urology service. The results showed that the surveillance of these patients poses a significant burden on radiology and urology services. Streamlining the follow-up process through initiatives such as virtual OPDs and dedicated MDTs could be considered in the future.

Stability of direct renin concentration and plasma renin activity in EDTA whole blood and plasma at ambient and refrigerated temperatures from 0 to 72 hours

Sophie Hepburn et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the appropriate transport and storage conditions for blood taken for direct renin concentration and plasma renin activity measurement. The results showed that stability of plasma renin activity and direct renin concentration in whole blood was acceptable at room temperature for up to 24 hours, but limited at refrigerated temperatures.

Regulation of the Placental Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System in Early- and Late-Onset Preeclampsia

K. A. Artemieva et al.

Summary: Preeclampsia is a dangerous complication of pregnancy characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, and multiple organ failure. This study characterized the expression of RAAS components and miRNAs controlling it in the placenta during different stages of preeclampsia manifestation. The findings will contribute to the future development of therapeutic strategies for preeclampsia and cardiovascular diseases.

Esaxerenone, a novel nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor blocker (MRB) in hypertension and chronic kidney disease

Ningning Wan et al.

Summary: Esaxerenone, a novel nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor blocker, has shown efficacy and good tolerability in treating hypertensive patients in Japan. In addition to lowering blood pressure, esaxerenone also demonstrates renoprotective effects. Clinical trials have indicated the potential clinical application of esaxerenone in treating renal diseases.

The Effect of Antihypertensive Medications on Testing for Primary Aldosteronism

Piotr Jedrusik et al.

Summary: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is a potentially curable form of secondary hypertension that requires measuring renin and aldosterone, followed by confirmatory tests. Various antihypertensive drug classes interfere with PA evaluation, with calcium antagonists and alpha-blockers being the least interfering drugs.
