Association of renal function with diabetic retinopathy and macular oedema among Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Lanhua Wang et al.

Summary: There is a strong association between renal function and vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR) and diabetic macular oedema (DMO) in diabetic patients. The association between glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and VTDR is significant, while the association with any DR depends on the presence of microalbuminuria. High microalbuminuria and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are significantly associated with DMO.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in older patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that the severity of DR was associated with deterioration of renal function and an increased prevalence of advanced CKD.

Increased Serum VEGF-B Level Is Associated With Renal Function Impairment in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

Yaping Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between serum VEGF-B level and the risk of renal function impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that serum VEGF-B level was positively correlated with triglyceride, serum creatinine, and cystatin C, while negatively correlated with HDL-C and eGFR. These findings suggest that serum VEGF-B level is an independent risk factor of renal function impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Association of Abnormal Renal Profiles with Subretinal Fluid in Diabetic Macular Edema

Xiaoyan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that higher albuminuria was associated with the presence of subretinal fluid in patients with diabetic macular edema, while lower serum albumin levels were associated with increased subretinal fluid thickness. The results suggest that poor kidney function may contribute to the development of subretinal fluid in diabetic macular edema patients. Routine screening for subretinal fluid should be conducted in patients with higher albuminuria and lower serum albumin levels.

Analysis of the Association between Metabolic Syndrome and Renal Function in Middle-Aged Patients with Diabetes

Yoonjin Park et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of metabolic syndrome on the estimated glomerular filtration rate in middle-aged participants with diabetes. The study found a significant association between metabolic syndrome and abnormal glomerular filtration rate, with higher risk in men and women with higher waist circumference and HDL cholesterol levels.

Intravitreal Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Inhibitor Use and Renal Function Decline in Patients with Diabetic Retinopathy

Shih-Hsiang Ou et al.

Summary: This study found an association between intravitreal VEGF inhibitor use and renal function decline in patients with diabetic retinopathy. Factors such as increased age, insulin use, hypertension, and ischemic heart disease were significantly associated with decreased estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs) in these patients after follow-up. Patients with lower initial eGFR levels who received intravitreal VEGF inhibitors showed significantly decreased renal function compared to those without treatment.

Factors associated with renal function state transitions: A population-based community survey in Taiwan

Ming-Hsien Tsai et al.

Summary: Understanding the risk factors associated with renal function state transitions in community residents is crucial for appropriate preventive and care actions. Factors such as estimated glomerular filtration rate, proteinuria, and diabetes mellitus were found to be significantly linked to state transitions, emphasizing the importance of personalized screening plans and services.

Exploring molecular targets in diabetic kidney disease

Sayako Maruno et al.

Summary: Diabetic kidney disease is a major challenge and the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease. Although the exact mechanism is not completely understood, several factors including hyperfiltration, oxidative stress, inflammation, hypoxia, and epigenetics are associated with its progression. Studies have shown that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists, and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists have renoprotective effects, while other potential therapeutic candidates are being explored. New targets, such as oxidative stress and inflammation pathways, are of great interest, and various drugs are under investigation. The discovery of new therapeutic options could provide alternative treatments for diabetic kidney disease.
