Global warming overshoots increase risks of climate tipping cascades in a network model

Nico Wunderling et al.

Summary: Current policies and actions are likely to cause a temporary overshoot of the Paris climate targets, leading to a global warming range that exceeds 1.5-< 2.0 degrees C above pre-industrial levels. This poses a risk to tipping elements such as the Greenland Ice Sheet and Amazon rainforest. A network model analysis shows that temporary overshoots can increase tipping risks by up to 72%, even if long-term temperatures stabilize within the Paris range. To avoid high-end climate risks, low-temperature overshoots and stabilization at or below current levels of global warming are necessary.

How can China achieve the 2030 carbon peak goal-a crossover analysis based on low-carbon economics and deep learning

Changfeng Shi et al.

Summary: This paper studies the carbon peak by analyzing low-carbon economics and deep learning. It uses the STIRPAT model and ridge regression to distinguish and rank the importance of influencing factors on carbon emissions. Additionally, it constructs an innovative GA-LSTM model for prediction. The results show that China's carbon emissions have been increasing, with only technological level having an inhibitory effect. China's carbon peak is projected to occur around 2030, with peak values of 11.82, 11.94, and 11.64 billion tons under different scenarios. The paper emphasizes the importance of focusing on energy consumption structure, industrial structure, and technological level for emission reduction work in China.

Analysis of provincial CO2 emission peaking in China: Insights from production and consumption

Xuepeng Guo et al.

Summary: China has committed to peaking its carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, with provincial governments sharing responsibility for emissions reductions. Requiring all provinces to peak CO2 production-based emissions by 2030 could negatively impact regional economies due to varying industrial divisions. This study proposes using consumption-based accounting (CBA) as a supplement to the traditional production-based accounting (PBA) to gain a comprehensive understanding of carbon emissions in Chinese provinces. The research finds that CBA peaking times are, on average, 4-5 years later than PBA peaking times.

Scenario simulations for the peak of provincial household CO2 emissions in China based on the STIRPAT model

Litong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the future evolution and peak times of household CO2 emissions (HCEs) from a provincial perspective in China. Using the STIRPAT model and three scenarios, the results show that most provinces can achieve HCEs peak before 2030, but there are still a few provinces that may not meet the emission target. Carbon emissions dynamic simulation and its peak of cities in the Pearl River Delta Urban Agglomeration

Shaojian Wang et al.

Summary: Cities are responsible for over 70% of global carbon emissions and their role in mitigating climate change is crucial. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the accuracy of carbon emission prediction models. Existing studies on urban carbon emission prediction have limitations, such as unclear impact analysis of the pandemic, single scenario prediction, and failure to provide decision support for carbon peak work. This study sets five carbon emission scenarios and combines multiple analysis methods to predict carbon emissions and potential for carbon peak and emission reduction in the Pearl River Delta Urban Agglomeration.

City-level emission peak and drivers in China

Summary: China's increasing role in global climate change mitigation is highlighted in this study, which provides comprehensive CO2 emission inventories for 287 Chinese cities from 2001 to 2019. The study reveals the emission trends and driving forces in these cities, showing that some cities have proactively peaked their emissions through efficiency improvements and energy use changes, while others passively decreased emissions through economic recession or population loss. The study emphasizes the need for passively emission declined cities to address the reasons behind emission decline and utilize low-carbon targets for economic recovery and carbon mitigation. Proactively peaked cities should seek strategies to maintain emission reductions and serve as successful models for cities with growing emissions.
