Is China approaching the inflection point of the ecological Kuznets curve? Analysis based on ecosystem service value at the county level

Summary: This study evaluates the county-level ecosystem service values (ESVs) of various land types in China and depicts the distribution of ESVs in various urban agglomerations. The nonlinear relationship between ESVs and economic development is also revealed. The main findings are: (1) From 2000 to 2018, ESVs in China decreased, with urban agglomerations experiencing a higher decline rate than the country as a whole. (2) The decline rate of ESVs in core cities is higher than in urban agglomerations, and it is higher in areas close to core cities and lower in areas far from core cities. (3) The ecological Kuznets curve of China has a positive U shape, while the ecological Kuznets curve of urban agglomerations has an N shape. The ecological Kuznets curve of core cities also has a positive U shape, whereas the ESVs of other cities decrease monotonically with the increase of economic level.

Assessing and simulating changes in ecosystem service value based on land use/cover change in coastal cities: A case study of Shanghai, China

Eco-industrial parks and green technological progress: Evidence from Chinese cities

Summary: This paper assesses the impact of national eco-industrial parks (EIPs) on green technological progress, focusing on Chinese cities. Staggered difference-in-differences is used to analyze panel data from 314 prefecture-level cities in China from 2002 to 2017, and the results show that EIPs significantly increase green technological progress. Various robustness checks, including event study, Oster omitted variable detection, and relevant city slope as instruments, corroborated the robustness of this finding. The research expenditure intensity, scale agglomeration level, and industrial structure optimization serve as channels through which EIPs stimulate green technological progress. Furthermore, the research demonstrates the existence of heterogeneity (in an inverted U-shape) between the green innovation effect of EIPs and city scale.

Contributing to carbon peak: Estimating the causal impact of eco-industrial parks on low-carbon development in China

Ecological risk assessment models for simulating impacts of land use and landscape pattern on ecosystem services

Summary: Rapid urbanization has negative impacts on land use and landscape patterns in watersheds, degrading ecosystem services and habitat quality. This study assesses the ecological risk in Houxi Basin, a typical southeastern coastal watershed in China, from 2011 to 2019. The results show that the risks of degrading habitat-provision services slightly increase, while the risks of degrading water-purification services increase rapidly. Reasonable planning of land use types and spatial layout can help reduce ecological risks. Other conclusions include the effectiveness of combined replacement of forest and grassland in inhibiting pollution diffusion and the importance of optimizing areas with high land-use impact coefficients in inhibiting pollution diffusion.
