Combined multivariate drought index for drought assessment in China from 2003 to 2020

Beibei Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite multivariate drought index (CMDI) was developed by combining three univariate drought indices (SPI, SRI, and WSDI) and four timescales (monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually) using a copula. The CMDI integrated information on terrestrial water storage, precipitation, and runoff to comprehensively assess drought trends and characteristics in 10 major basins in China from 2003 to 2020. The results showed an increasing trend of drought in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and North China Plain, with more severe drought in northern China than in southern China, as monitored by the CMDI.

A comprehensive drought index based on remote sensing data and nested copulas for monitoring meteorological and agroecological droughts: A case study on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Yujia Cheng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new comprehensive remote sensing drought index (CRSDI) based on the nested copulas of remotely sensed precipitation, vegetation index, and land surface temperature that represent water availability, vegetation health, and disturbance impact, respectively, for monitoring meteorological and agroecological droughts. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is chosen as a case study to test the CRSDI and investigate drought changes and their impacts on vegetation. The results show that CRSDI can effectively monitor the propagation processes and characteristics of meteorological and agroecological droughts. Drought conditions on the QTP are overall relieved from 2000 to 2020, while these changes show an apparent spatial variability, with a general drying (wetting) trend in the north (south). Moreover, vegetation response to drought is different among different vegetation types, with shrubland having a stronger response, followed by cropland, grassland, and forestland. Clearly, CRSDI is valuable for large-scale drought monitoring and assessment.

Enhancing the resilience of ecosystem services under extreme events in socio-hydrological systems: A spatio-temporal analysis

Massoud Behboudian et al.

Summary: This paper presents a methodology for assessing the resilience of ecosystem services (ESs), taking into account seven resilience principles, and applies it to Zarrinehroud River Basin in north-western Iran. The results show that implementing a set of projects, such as improving irrigation networks and drainage facilities, can significantly increase the resilience of sub-basins in the study area and reduce vulnerability to droughts.

Drought and flood risk assessment for rainfed agriculture based on Copula-Bayesian conditional probabilities

Wentong Yang et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify drought and flood risks in rainfed agriculture using conditional probabilities and reduce food losses caused by these disasters. The results show that droughts from May to July and floods from January to March have the greatest impact on rainfed crops in the three northeastern provinces of China. Specific cities, such as Huludao, Changchun, Baishan, Baicheng, Yanbian, Hegang, and Jiamusi, face a higher risk of drought in rainfed crops, while Yichun and Suihua face a higher risk of flooding. These findings provide quantitative guidance for food security work in the three northeastern regions of China.

A nonstationary bivariate design flood estimation approach coupled with the most likely and expectation combination strategies

Yiming Hu et al.

Summary: A framework is proposed to estimate the nonstationary bivariate design flood, which includes constructing a nonstationary copula model, using the equivalent reliability method to calculate design values and design lifespan length, and calculating the design value of the secondary variable using conditional most likely combination and conditional expectation combination strategies. A case study shows the design value combination of the nonstationary bivariate and its temporal variation.

Development of a multi-GCMs Bayesian copula method for assessing multivariate drought risk under climate change: A case study of the Aral Sea basin

X. Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method (MGBC) was used to assess the impact of climate change on drought risk in the Aral Sea basin. The findings indicate that climate change will increase the level of drought risk in the basin, particularly in the middle and lower reaches. The main factors contributing to drought risk are meteorological conditions and human activities.

A Bayesian copula-based nonstationary framework for compound flood risk assessment along US coastlines

Kasra Naseri et al.

Summary: When elevated coastal water levels and heavy precipitation occur simultaneously or in succession, their joint impact may be exacerbated compared to their individual occurrence. A copula-based Bayesian framework incorporating the impact of dependence between flooding drivers (i.e., sea level and precipitation) and accounting for nonstationarity in these variables is developed to assess compound coastal-pluvial flooding. Results show that the Southeast Atlantic coast experiences the highest increase in the risk of compound flooding, and precipitation patterns have a smaller influence on flood frequency compared to sea-level rise and dependence.

Reassessing the frequency and severity of meteorological drought considering non-stationarity and copula-based bivariate probability

Muhammad Jehanzaib et al.

Summary: Drought is a multifaceted natural phenomenon with significant environmental, social, and economic effects. The utility of conventional drought indices is questioned due to rapid environmental changes, leading to the proposal of a new non-stationary standardized precipitation index (SPINS). Results show that SPINS calculates more severe drought severity and more reliable return periods compared to conventional indices.

An accuracy-improved flood risk and ecological risk assessment in an interconnected river-lake system based on a copula-coupled hydrodynamic risk assessment model

Rui Yang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a Copula-coupled Hydrodynamic Risk Assessment Model (CHRAM) to accurately quantify flood event-related risks in the Nansi Lake Basin during the flood season under the operation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. The model highlights the sensitivity of total flood volume and duration to flood risk and ecological risk. The results demonstrate the significant impact of duration on various types of risk, with the occurrence probability of flood-ecological combined risk falling between that of flood risk and ecological risk.

Samaneh Ashraf et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the country-wide groundwater depletion in Iran using publicly-available data from 478 sub-basins and 30 basins during the period of 2002-2015. The analysis indicates that groundwater depletion in Iran is severe, with potentially irreversible impacts on land and environment.

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics, joint probability distribution, and recurrence period of drought events in Northern Shaanxi using meteorological station data. The results showed frequent drought occurrences with varying durations and intensities in the region. The study identified the optimal distribution and fitting function for drought intensity and duration, providing guidance for the prevention and management of agricultural dryland in Northern Shaanxi.

Spatial and temporal assessment of groundwater quality and hydrogeochemical processes in Urmia Lake Basin, Iran

Mohammadreza Pashaeifar et al.

Summary: The study revealed a deterioration in groundwater quality in the Azarshahr and Ajabshir planes over the past six years, with significant differences in water quality between the two areas. The irrigation water quality in Azarshahr was found to be better than in Ajabshir, highlighting the need for increased control of pollutants.
