Treble innovation firms: Antecedents, outcomes, and enhancing factors

Ferran Vendrell-Herrero et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of digitalization and service business models on innovation-oriented manufacturing firms. Findings from a survey of 423 Spanish manufacturing firms show that treble innovation firms represent the new norm, accounting for 21.7% of all manufacturing firms. Setting contextual conditions to resolve grand challenges through responsible innovation: A comparative patent analysis in the circular economy

Yipeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study assesses the innovation performance of for-profit firms seeking to resolve grand challenges (GCs) through responsible innovation (RI) by considering hybrid organizations, institutional rigidity, and national innovation systems (NISs). By studying a multi-country sample of 1153 manufacturing firms, the research found that RI firms have lower likelihood and productivity of patenting compared to non-RI firms. However, a stronger national R&D environment can enhance the patent productivity of RI firms, and RI firms in industries with lower technological complexity benefit more from improvements in R&D environments.

Servitized SMEs' performance and the influences of sustainable procurement, packaging, and distribution: The mediating role of eco-innovation

Sabeen Hussain Bhatti et al.

Summary: This paper is one of the pioneering studies to examine the role of sustainable supply chain practices in the context of servitized SMEs in Pakistan. The study analyzes the impact of sustainable servitization on various performance indicators and investigates the mediating role of eco-innovation. Based on data collected from 280 managers, the study found that sustainable practices have a positive impact on servitized SMEs' performance, with the exception of sustainable procurement's influence on operational performance. Eco-innovation was found to partially mediate the analyzed relationships.

Digital disruption of optimal co-innovation configurations

Esteban Lafuente et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the co-innovation trajectory of firms adopting different collaborative innovation networks. Empirical results from a multilevel regression and a Nash bargaining model estimated via data envelopment analysis on a sample of 734 enterprises from seven OECD countries show that there are important national and firm-level distinctions across the optimal co-innovation configurations. Vertical co-innovation strategies are characteristic of firms with the highest innovation efficiency, while institutions are frequently found to be optimal for co-innovation success in less developed innovation systems. However, digital competency disrupts co-innovation configurations for successful innovation and facilitates the development of efficient vertical and horizontal co-innovation trajectories.

Does the circular economy fuel the throwaway society? The role of opportunity costs for products that lose value over time

Frank Figge et al.

Summary: Efficient use of natural resources is necessary for sustainability, and a circular economy and extending product lifetimes are strategies to increase resource efficiency. However, this article argues that in a fully circular economy, consumers are incentivized to discard products more quickly, which conflicts with the goal of extending product use. Closing resource loops and transitioning to a circular economy may incentivize more unsustainable behavior.
