Preparation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane blended with acrylamide grafted bentonite for oily water treatment

Tausif Ahmad et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the hydrophilicity, morphology, and antifouling characteristics of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes for separating oily wastewater by incorporating modified bentonite. The surface of bentonite nanoparticles is modified using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) with acrylamide grafted bentonite (AAm-g-bentonite). Various techniques, such as FTIR, TGA, sedimentation tests, FE-SEM, etc., are employed to study the modified bentonite nanoparticles. A flat-sheet PVC-based membrane is prepared by blending AAm-g-bentonite using the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. The performance of the mixed-matrix membranes is characterized using FE-SEM, FTIR, sedimentation test, contact angle, porosity, antifouling property, and filtration studies of pure and oily water. The presence of modified bentonite (AAm-g-bentonite) improves membrane performance, with the best result achieved at PVC/AAm-g-ben-8 (8 wt% of AAm-g-bentonite), exhibiting enhanced pure water flux, permeate flux, and oil rejection.
