Emerging Contaminants in Soil and Water

Haimanote K. Bayabil et al.

Summary: The global population increase is putting immense pressure on dwindling natural resources like soil and freshwater. Climate change and variability aggravate the water scarcity problem, impacting agriculture significantly. However, agriculture is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the growing global population's food and fiber needs. Soil and water quality pose a bigger threat to productivity and availability, with excess nutrient loadings causing deterioration and emerging contaminants like heavy metals impairing soil and freshwater sources. These emerging contaminants not only affect soil and water quality but also pose risks to human and animal health through the food chain. Limited research and understanding on emerging contaminants highlight the need for more investigation.
