Highly tough, degradable, and water-resistant bio-based supramolecular plastics comprised of cellulose and tannic acid

Haoxiang Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, high-performance degradable plastics with high mechanical strength, satisfactory water resistance, and rapid degradation characteristics were fabricated through the complexation of regenerated cellulose and tannic acid. The resulting plastic, called C-TA, exhibited ultrahigh fracture strength and toughness. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the introduction of dendritic tannic acid molecules enhanced the toughness of the plastic. The C-TA plastic also displayed excellent water resistance and could be fully degraded in soil within 35 days.

Summary: A chemical modification method was developed to modify the surface of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) from an ordinary bamboo. The modified CNFs were used as nano-fillers to improve the properties of films based on polylactic acid (PLA). The study showed that the addition of 5% modified CNFs resulted in improved thermal, mechanical, and surface properties of the films.

Compatibility and interphase properties of poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA)/Kraft lignin films assessed by nanomechanical analyses

Lais Taguchi Possari et al.

Summary: The combination of technical lignins and biodegradable polymers to create sustainable materials is a common method for maximizing the value of these biomacromolecules. In this study, PBSA and Kraft lignin films were prepared and their phase morphology, miscibility, compatibility, and interphase properties were analyzed using AFM-QNM. The results showed strong intermolecular interactions and partial miscibility between the components, with lignin particles uniformly dispersed and promoting stiffening in the PBSA phase. AFM-QNM measurements provided comprehensive qualitative and quantitative information about the morphology and nanomechanical properties of the films, allowing for a better understanding of the compatibility and miscibility of lignin/thermoplastic compounds compared to traditional characterization methods.

Thermoplastic Blends Based on Poly(Butylene Succinate-co-Adipate) and Different Collagen Hydrolysates from Tanning Industry: I-Processing and Thermo-mechanical Properties

Maurizia Seggiani et al.

Summary: Blends of PBSA with two different hydrolyzed collagens were investigated, showing that the HCs influenced the rheology, morphology, and mechanical properties of the blends. Alkaline hydrolyzed collagen acted as a plasticizer, while enzymatic hydrolyzed collagen behaved as an organic filler. The study concludes that both HCs can be used in the production of thermoplastic blends for agriculture and plant nurseries applications.

Evaluating the Ready Biodegradability of Biodegradable Plastics

Ryosuke Nabeoka et al.

Summary: Reducing environmental burden and assessing plastic safety are global challenges. Limited standard test data on plastic biodegradability has prompted researchers to evaluate 8 biodegradable plastics using OECD test guidelines. Some plastics showed over 60% biodegradation by day 28, indicating ready biodegradability. Lowering test concentrations may improve biodegradation rates for certain plastics like PHB, PHBV, and PBS.
