Urea removal for ultrapure water production by VUV/UV/chlorine under acidic aqueous conditions: Facile elimination and efficient denitrification

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a high-efficiency urea removal strategy using VUV/UV/chlorine process in an acidic solution, which can thoroughly remove 2 mg/L of urea within 9 minutes. The removal efficiency of urea can be improved by decreasing the pH and increasing the oxidant dosage, and the presence of chloride anion enhances urea removal.

Enrichment and analysis methods for trace dissolved organic carbon in reverse osmosis effluent: A review

Xiaowen Chen et al.

Summary: Reverse osmosis (RO) is crucial for producing high-quality ultrapure water. The use of reclaimed water as a source affects the effluent quality of ultrapure water due to the higher concentration and complexity of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in RO permeate. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the components of DOC to optimize treatment processes.

Critical review and comprehensive analysis of trace organic compound (TOrC) removal with polyamide RO/NF membranes: Mechanisms and materials

Min Gyu Shin et al.

Summary: Trace organic compounds (TOrCs) are a critical concern for water quality and safety, with advanced water treatment technologies like reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes showing promise in removing these compounds. The rejection mechanisms of TOrCs by RO/NF membranes remain unclear due to differences in membrane structures and limited research on TOrCs. This review focuses on characterizing rejection mechanisms and proposes future directions for improving TOrC separation performance of RO/NF membranes.

Treatment of semiconductor-industry wastewater with the application of ceramic membrane and polymeric membrane

Yeit Haan Teow et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of commercial ultrafiltration ceramic and polymeric membranes in treating semiconductor industry wastewaters. The ceramic membrane showed the highest permeate flux and lowest fouling rate, with the ability to mitigate irreversible fouling using different cleaning agents to recover silicon. The research covered the long-term application of ceramic and polymeric membranes for silicon recovery and wastewater treatment.

The pro-radical hydrogen peroxide as a stable hydroxyl radical distributor: lessons from pancreatic beta cells

Sigurd Lenzen et al.

Summary: The toxicity of H2O2 is limited, but it can distribute its toxic effect throughout the cell due to its stability and long half-life. The highly toxic HO• radical is generated from H2O2 and its action is locally restricted. H2O2 acts as a spreader of the HO• radical, and they depend on each other to execute their toxic effects.

Degradation of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) during UV-LED/H2O2 reaction: Degassing effect, radical contribution, and degradation mechanism

Tae-Kyoung Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation mechanism of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) during the UV-LED/H2O2 reaction under initial nitrogen purging conditions. The results showed that the hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) played a major role in the degradation of TMAH.

Modeling micropollutant removal by nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes: considerations and challenges

S. Castano Osorio et al.

Summary: Organic micropollutants (OMPs) in drinking water pose a potential risk to human health, and their effective removal is necessary. This review discusses the application of nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technologies for OMP removal. It presents a classification of OMPs based on their properties and characteristics, allowing for the study and prediction of their rejection. The review also explores rejection mechanisms and interfacial phenomena, proposing an extended Nernst-Plank equation for calculating solute transport across membranes. Ultimately, the review aims to improve predictions of OMP rejection by membranes.
