Fractional contribution of global warming and regional urbanization to intensifying regional heatwaves across Eurasia

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: The frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves in Eurasia are increasing, with the occurrence of the first heatwave event tending to be earlier, especially in Europe, East Asia, Central Asia, Southwest Asia, and the Mediterranean region. These intensified heatwave activities are strongly influenced by both climate change and human activities.

Heat Wave Trends in Southeast Asia: Comparison of Results From Observation and Reanalysis Data

Xian-Xiang Li et al.

Summary: Southeast Asia, a region limited by data availability, is experiencing an increased frequency, longer duration, and higher intensity of heat waves. The trends in heat wave characteristics defined by minimum temperatures are larger than those defined by maximum temperatures, indicating anomalously warm nights. The study highlights the importance of high-quality data for heat wave research in Southeast Asia.

Magnitudes and patterns of large-scale permafrost ground deformation revealed by Sentinel-1 InSAR on the central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: By developing a permafrost-tailored InSAR approach, the study reconstructs seasonal and long-term deformation of permafrost and finds that ground deformation is mainly controlled by factors such as slope angle, with warm and ice-rich permafrost regions being more vulnerable to extensive long-term subsidence. Additionally, different types of permafrost regions exhibit varying deformation patterns.

Diurnal temperature range variability driven by cloud cover and precipitation in Mongolian Plateau under global warming

Li Na et al.

Summary: The diurnal temperature range (DTR) has significantly decreased in many land areas as a consequence of global warming. This study investigates the spatial distribution and future projections of DTR variations on the Mongolian Plateau under different global warming levels. Precipitation and cloud cover were found to be the main factors influencing DTR changes. This study enhances the understanding of climate change in the region and provides a valuable reference for similar studies.

The 2021 western North America heat wave among the most extreme events ever recorded globally

Vikki Thompson et al.

Summary: In June 2021, a unprecedented heat wave occurred in western North America, far exceeding the previously observed temperature range. By using a novel assessment method, it is found that this heat wave was extremely intense, exceeding four standard deviations. Only five more extreme heat waves have been recorded globally since 1960. It is also discovered that the statistical distribution of heat extremes increases over time, indicating a shift in the distribution mean due to climate change.

Analysing the 2021 North American heatwave to understand extraordinary heat events

Samuel Bartusek et al.

Summary: Investigating the unprecedented 2021 heatwave in the North American Pacific Northwest revealed that a complex interaction between atmospheric dynamics, soil moisture, and temperature nonlinearly amplified the event beyond a five-sigma anomaly. These findings may contribute to a better understanding of the physical drivers of future heat extremes.

Accelerated western European heatwave trends linked to more-persistent double jets over Eurasia

Efi Rousi et al.

Summary: Persistent heat extremes in Europe have severe impacts on ecosystems and societies, and the heatwave trends in Europe have been accelerating compared to other regions. The increase in the persistence of double jet events over Eurasia is found to be a major driver of this acceleration. These findings have important implications for risk management and potential adaptation strategies.

Heatwave-blocking relation change likely dominates over decrease in blocking frequency under global warming

Pak Wah Chan et al.

Summary: In studying the impacts of global warming on heatwaves, researchers found that changes in blocking, heatwave-blocking relations, and average temperature increases all play a role in influencing heatwave frequency. The future increase in heatwave frequency is primarily driven by changes in the heatwave-blocking relation and the rise in average temperature.

Summary: This study developed a high-resolution temperature dataset for the Eurasian continent to support climate change analysis. Machine learning methods were used to train temperature estimation models and the impact of different features on the models was tested. The results showed that the model had high estimation accuracy and competitive temperature products. This study provides a scheme for estimating parameters with missing feature values and lays a solid foundation for environmental and climate change studies.

2021 North American heatwave amplified by climate change-driven nonlinear interactions

Samuel Bartusek et al.

Summary: The heat conditions in North America during the summer of 2021 surpassed previous heatwaves, an occurrence that many would have considered impossible under current climate conditions. The severity of this heat event was amplified by interactions between atmospheric circulation, regional soil moisture deficiency, and nonlinear drivers, potentially driven by long-term regional warming and soil drying. Global warming has transformed the likelihood of such events, with a projected increase in frequency as global temperatures continue to rise.

Mechanisms for regional compound hot extremes in the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River

Yi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms leading to compound hot extremes in the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River, highlighting the crucial role of an anomalous anticyclone in reducing cloud cover and increasing solar radiation to cause extreme daytime high temperatures. Intensified southerlies transporting additional water vapour help to establish a stable atmospheric stratification, offsetting nighttime radiative cooling and elevating nighttime low temperatures to form compound hot extremes. The study emphasizes the hot-humid nature of compound hot extremes in the study area.

Urban ecological land and natural-anthropogenic environment interactively drive surface urban heat island: An urban agglomeration-level study in China

Rundong Feng et al.

Summary: The study reveals a clear spatiotemporal coupling between urban ecological land (UEL) and the urban heat island effect in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The evolution of UEL landscape structure is related to the mitigation of the heat island effect, with UEL patches dominance and richness explaining a significant portion of the effect. The implementation of ecological restoration projects has led to a shift towards the dominance of UEL and natural-anthropogenic factors in reducing the urban heat island effect.

Anthropogenic emissions and urbanization increase risk of compound hot extremes in cities

Summary: Observation and simulation data across eastern China indicate increasing risks of compound heat extremes in urban areas, attributed to urban expansion and anthropogenic emissions. Future emissions and urbanization are projected to further increase the frequency of these events, leading to a significant growth in urban population exposure to heat threats.
