Spatiotemporal PAH levels in surface water of the Southeastern Black Sea; baseline study from the Giresun shores

Handan Aydin et al.

Summary: Samples of surface water were collected seasonally along the 121 km long Giresun coastline to evaluate the source, distribution, and ecological risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The levels of PAHs in seawater ranged from 47.42 to 576.69 ng L-1 with an average of 161.5 ng L-1, consistent with global seawater studies. The primary sources of PAHs were biomass, coal and petroleum combustion, with petroleum contributing to a lesser extent. The ecological risk posed by PAHs in Giresun coastal seawater was found to be moderate to high, except for autumn which showed low to moderate risk according to TEQ. RQ values of n-ary sumation PAHs displayed low to moderate ecological risk.

Toxicological effects of cigarette butts for marine organisms

Giulia Lucia et al.

Summary: Cigarette butts (CBs) are a common form of litter on beaches and represent an unexplored environmental threat. This study investigated the toxicological risks of CBs on marine organisms through chemical analyses and a variety of biological responses. The results showed that CBs released trace metals, hydrocarbons, nicotine, and cotinine, which significantly impacted bacterial bioluminescence, oyster embryo development, and algal growth. Laboratory experiments on mussels exposed to CBs also revealed accumulation of chemicals and significant alterations in immune, antioxidant, and neurotoxic responses.

Current levels and composition profiles of microplastics in irrigation water

Jheng-Jie Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution, characteristics, sources, and risks of microplastics in irrigation water in Taiwan. The results showed that microplastics were widely and unevenly distributed along the irrigation system, with higher concentrations in densely populated areas and areas with runoff input. Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis revealed the impact of rainy seasons and typhoons on the population densities. The study also calculated the polymer risk index and found a high microplastic risk throughout the year except in November and January. This research provides valuable insights for understanding and managing microplastics in irrigation water.

Remediation of soils and sediments polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: To immobilize, mobilize, or degrade?

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: PAHs are generated due to incomplete burning of organic substances, primarily influenced by the use of fossil fuels. They impose health impacts on humans and other living organisms due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic properties. Their high hydrophobicity and low water solubility influence their adsorption onto soils and sediments, affecting their bioavailability and subsequent degradation.

A weight-of-evidence approach for identifying potential sources of untreated sewage inputs into a complex urbanized catchment

Annachiara Codello et al.

Summary: The Hawkesbury-Nepean River, the largest catchment in the Sydney region, is facing unprecedented population growth, leading to various anthropogenic inputs such as treated sewage, stormwater, and agricultural runoff. Despite no gradient of faecal contamination along the river system, two sites with evidence of untreated sewage contamination were identified, originating possibly from industrial runoff and a dry weather sewage leak. This study demonstrates the potential of a weight-of-evidence approach in identifying small sources of contamination and reshaping monitoring strategies for assessing the health of aquatic systems.

Summary: The research found low levels of PAHs contamination in Sungai Perak. Results of ecological and health risk assessments showed that the Hazard Index values for raw water were below one, indicating low risk, while treated water had values higher than one, suggesting high risk to aquatic organisms and human health. The Lifetime Cancer Risk values for both raw and treated water exceeded the maximum permissible limit, highlighting the inefficiency of conventional water treatment systems in removing PAHs and the need for restructuring or alternative water sources.

Developing an integrated framework for source apportionment and source-specific health risk assessment of PAHs in soils: Application to a typical cold region in China

Yuxin Zhang et al.

Summary: A new integrated methodology framework was proposed for source apportionment and source-oriented risk evaluation of PAHs in soils of a typical cold region in Northeastern China. Two advanced receptor models, PMF and MCR-WALS, were employed to identify the main sources of soil PAHs and assess the health risks posed by them. The results showed that coal combustion and gasoline engine were the main contributors to soil PAHs, with negligible health risks for both adults and children. Source-oriented risk assessment indicated that coal combustion had the highest contribution to the total risk of PAHs in soils.
