Sector-level estimates for global future copper demand and the potential for resource efficiency

Stefanie Klose et al.

Summary: We evaluate the effectiveness of resource efficiency strategies for copper and find that final global copper demand will increase under the SSP2-RCP2.6 scenario. Copper demand for vehicles and transportation infrastructure will quadruple. However, improved scrap sorting and higher collection rates can decrease primary copper production in 2050. With ambitious material efficiency and demand-side sufficiency, it is possible to return to the primary copper production levels of 2020.

Modelling the Demand and Access of Mineral Resources in a Changing World

Olivier Vidal et al.

Summary: Humanity is currently utilizing mineral resources at an unprecedented level, and demand will continue to grow in the coming decades before stabilizing by the end of the century. Estimating the demand for raw materials requires a bottom-up and regionalized approach, while the supply capacity can be assessed by considering long-term prices, energy and production costs, resource quality, and the rate of technological improvement. The future of mineral resources presents two opposing views: a significant increase in costs and prices due to the depletion of high quality deposits, or a favorable compensation through technological advancements. However, these views are not applicable simultaneously, as the world is entering a period of long-term production cost increases.

Sector-specific scenarios for future stocks and flows of aluminum: An analysis based on shared socioeconomic pathways

Julien Pedneault et al.

Summary: This article investigates the material flow of aluminum alloys and proposes a method for sustainable management of this resource. The results show that global per capita aluminum stocks will reach 200-400 kg before 2100 under different socioeconomic scenarios. The demand in different industries also shows varying growth and saturation patterns.

Dynamic modeling of global fossil fuel infrastructure and materials needs: a lack of available data

Hugo Le Boulzec et al.

Summary: The low-carbon energy transition requires a significant input of energy and materials for a global change in energy infrastructures, with the material intensities of oil, gas and coal supply chains stagnating for more than 30 years. Scenarios from the International Energy Agency show that gas is the main driver of current and future material consumption, and recycling steel from decommissioned fossil fuels infrastructures can meet the cumulative need of future low-carbon technologies while reducing energy and environmental impact.
