Sustainable energy-water-food nexus integration and optimisation in eco -industrial parks

Jamileh Fouladi et al.

Summary: In this study, a representation of the Energy-Water-Food (EWF) nexus is developed to capture the tradeoffs and synergies within an industrial park. A systems approach based on thermodynamics is used to optimize the nexus and enhance resource efficiency. The case study in Qatar evaluates resource efficiency enhancement possibilities across various scenarios and considers trade-offs between minimizing total cost and environmental emissions. The importance of utilizing biomass from the food sector to capture synergistic potential is emphasized. The results indicate improvements in global warming potential and exergy efficiency in the best performing scenario.

An Energy-Water-Food Nexus-based Decision-making Framework to Guide National Priorities in Qatar

Sarah Namany et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the performance of the EWF sectors in the State of Qatar using an integrative assessment tool, finding that resilience is more critical than security and sustainability in the overall EWF nexus. The vulnerability of the three nexus sectors, particularly water and food, was revealed, emphasizing the need for future investments to secure stable and resilient availability of resources. The study offers a generic roadmap for countries to set national priorities based on evidence-informed performance assessments, reflecting optimal resource conditions and cost-effective decisions.

Flowsheet development for the steam gasification of animal manure with subsequent CO2 capturing using CaO: an Aspen Plus(R) modelling study

Muhammad Shahbaz et al.

Summary: A flowsheet model for steam gasification of animal manure with CaO for CO2 capturing was developed using Aspen Plus software. The study found that by varying the CaO/manure ratio, the CO2 content decreased while the H-2 content increased significantly. This process showed benefits in terms of cost and performance compared to gasification without CaO utilization.

Pyrolysis Study of Different Fruit Wastes Using an Aspen Plus Model

Ahmed AlNouss et al.

Summary: Large quantities of fruit wastes are generated during consumption and processing of fruits. Disposal of these wastes is challenging, and biochar production from fruit wastes by pyrolysis is receiving attention for its environmental benefits. Different types of fruit wastes were examined, and modeling was used to predict product yields, with date pits showing the highest char yield and mango endocarp offering the highest syngas yield. Optimization of biomass feedstock blend indicated apricot kernel shell and date pits as dominant feedstocks for biochar production.
