Degradation of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol in UV-based AOPs for photoreactors with reflective inner surfaces: Kinetics and transformation products

Tan Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol in surface water using different UV-based advanced oxidation processes was successfully achieved, with possible degradation pathways proposed. The dynamic model developed in a photoreactor with reflective inner surfaces effectively simulated the degradation process of the two compounds.

The optimal dose of oxidants in UV-based advanced oxidation processes with respect to primary radical concentrations

Tan Meng et al.

Summary: This study derived a simple equation for theoretical optimal concentration of H2O2 in the UV/H2O2 AOP, which was validated using a comprehensive kinetic model. The equation was applied to 77 environmental water samples, introducing the concept of practical optimal oxidant dose while minimizing operation costs. The study also showed the potential extension of the simple equation to other UV-based AOPs.

A review on the degradation efficiency, DBP formation, and toxicity variation in the UV/chlorine treatment of micropollutants

Yujin Yeom et al.

Summary: The UV/chlorine process is an emerging advanced oxidation treatment method that can effectively degrade refractory micropollutants, but may also lead to the formation of toxic transformation products and disinfection byproducts. Studies have shown that the toxicity variations of micropollutants in the UV/chlorine treatment are related to their compound-specific reactivity towards specific reactive species. Further research on the cost-effectiveness of the UV/chlorine process regarding micropollutant degradation without increasing associated toxicity is necessary.
