Venkata Siva Naga Sai Goli et al.

Summary: In this study, forensic investigations were conducted on a 1900 years old Buddhist stupa located in Nalasopara, India, through comprehensive characterization of bricks and mud mortar samples. Various techniques such as BET-specific surface area, helium gas pycnometer, XRF, XRD, ATR-FTIR, Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry, SEM-EDX and TG-DTA were used to investigate the overall conservation status of the bricks. Based on the comprehensive characterization, it was observed that the stupa was primarily constructed using normal and overfired bricks with firing temperatures varying between 700 and 900 degrees C, and the lateritic soil used for making the bricks and mud mortar was excavated from the same geological formation.

Investigations on characteristics of landfill-mined-soil-like-fractions and their dependency on organic matter

Venkata Siva Naga Sai Goli et al.

Summary: Landfill mining is an alternative method to overcome the adverse effects of landfills and dumpsites. However, the feasibility of utilizing the mined residues for sustainable development is still debated. The lack of comprehensive characterization of landfill-mined-soil-like fractions (LFMSF) and understanding of their physicochemical characteristics pose challenges in developing proper guidelines and strategies. This study conducted a comprehensive characterization of LFMSF obtained from UCLDs/ELFs in India and established relationships between organic matter and LFMSF characteristics.

The risk of nano- and micro-plastics contamination on the geoenvironment: an ecotoxicological perspective

Brendan C. O'Kelly et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution in the terrestrial environment poses a significant threat to ecosystem function and health. Although there are knowledge gaps regarding the interactions between nano- and micro-plastics (NMPs) and the natural environment, there is increasing evidence of detrimental effects on various species. NMPs have the ability to adsorb heavy metals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and other pollutants, contributing to their migration in the terrestrial environment. The airborne and dietary transmission routes of NMPs and their effects on human health are still not fully understood.

Characterization and Utilization of Landfill-Mined-Soil-Like-Fractions (LFMSF) for Sustainable Development: A Critical Appraisal

N. Chandana et al.

Summary: Unscientifically created landfills and dumps pose a severe threat to the geoenvironment due to the uncontrolled release of greenhouse gases and toxic leachate. Landfill mining is being advocated as a method to recover resources such as metals, plastics, glass, and paper from these sites, but it generates large volumes of fine-fractions, also known as 'Landfill-Mined-Soil-like-Fractions' (LFMSF), which are a mix of organics, soils, debris, and smaller chips of metals, plastics, and glass. Utilizing LFMSF as a manmade resource for sustainable development is still a challenge due to site-specific characteristics and lack of understanding.
