The role of foreign trade and technology innovation on economic recovery in China: The mediating role of natural resources development

Mohammad Maruf Hasan et al.

Summary: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has caused a global economic collapse, impacting worldwide economic operations. This study examines the significance of natural resource volatility, foreign trade, technological innovation, urbanisation, and energy resource investment on the economic recovery of Chinese provinces. The results show that investments in energy sector resources, international commerce, and technological innovation are inconsistent with GDP and natural resources. The study proposes strategies such as stabilising fluctuating natural resource costs, encouraging green financing, and increasing investment in energy resources.

Climate warming outweighed agricultural managements in affecting wheat phenology across China during 1981-2018

Fulu Tao et al.

Summary: This study utilized the longest and most extensive wheat phenological observations in China to investigate the response of wheat phenology to climate warming, the effect of asymmetric warming, and the influence of different drivers on wheat phenological change. The results showed delayed sowing dates but advanced heading and maturity dates for wheat in general. The impacts of climate change on wheat phenology varied among different regions and between winter and spring wheat. Temperature had varying effects on different growth stages of wheat. Climate warming, cultivar shifts, and other agricultural managements collectively contributed to changes in wheat phenology. The findings provide new insights into the spatiotemporal changes of wheat phenology and the factors driving these changes in China over the past four decades.

Critical review of the impact of cover crops on soil properties

Komlan Koudahe et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the contribution of cover crops to soil properties. It discusses the advantages and uses of different types of cover crops, such as grass species for soil cover and decomposition, broadleaf species for quick decomposition and residue release, and leguminous species for nitrogen fixation. It also highlights the benefits of cover crops in improving soil health, including reducing soil density, improving soil structure and hydraulic properties, and increasing organic carbon and nutrient content. Additionally, cover crops promote microbial activity and diversity. Proper management of cover crops can enhance soil health as an essential practice in soil conservation.

Spatiotemporal changes in greenhouse gas emissions and soil organic carbon sequestration for major cropping systems across China and their drivers over the past two decades

Yicheng Wang et al.

Summary: Chinese agriculture has undergone significant changes in the past few decades, affecting greenhouse gas emissions and soil organic carbon sequestration in croplands. Paddy lands mainly contribute to carbon emissions due to methane emissions, while uplands could serve as carbon sinks because of soil organic carbon sequestration. Nationally, changes in crop planting area and yields have reduced net greenhouse gas emissions, while changes in nitrogen use efficiency and cropping systems have increased them.

Cold stress reduces nodulation and symbiotic nitrogen fixation in winter annual legume cover crops

Charlotte L. Thurston et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of cold temperatures on legume cover crop growth and symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF). The results showed that lower temperatures negatively affected legume cover crop growth and nodulation parameters, and the optimum temperature for SNF fell in the range of 15°C to 20°C. Winter conditions also had a negative impact on legume cover crop productivity, with hairy vetch showing the best growth response to spring warming.

A Declining Trend in China's Future Cropland-N2O Emissions Due to Reduced Cropland Area

Qingrui Wang et al.

Summary: This study predicts a decreasing trend in future cropland N2O emissions in China using high-precision land use data, with a reduction in total emissions and cropland area. However, some cities in China are projected to emit more than current levels, and different land use and climate change scenarios will have significant impacts on cropland N2O emissions. The implementation of environmental projects, like the Grain for Green Plan, could effectively control emissions by about 12%.

Cover crops promote primary crop yield in China: A meta-regression of factors affecting yield gain

Fan Fan et al.

Summary: The study found that cover crops in China can increase average primary crop yields by 9.7%, with effects varying based on factors such as climatic zone and field management. Winter cover crops in subtropical rice systems showed the highest yield benefits, while summer cover crops in temperate wheat systems had minimal benefits. Legume cover crops had a greater impact on primary crop yield compared to non-legume cover crops.
