A blockchain non-fungible token-enabled 'passport' for construction waste material cross-jurisdictional trading

Liupengfei Wu et al.

Summary: This research aims to develop a blockchain non-fungible token (NFT)-enabled Waste Material Passport (WMP) to reduce information asymmetry in construction waste material (CWM) cross-border trading. The framework digitizes CWM into NFT-enabled passports, prevents duplicated issuance with unique NFT identifiers, enhances information transparency through blockchain distributed ledgers, improves trading efficiency via decentralized consensus, and secures transaction records with cryptographic algorithms. The prototype of the framework is found feasible and can be used for future applications in the circular economy.

If invisible carbon waste can be traded, why not visible construction waste? Establishing the construction waste trading ?missing market?

Ziyu Peng et al.

Summary: A significant proportion of solid waste produced by rapidly urbanizing regions comes from construction activities. This study proposes a cap-and-trade construction waste trading scheme based on the Coase Theorem to incentivize waste reduction and recycling. A preparation-implementation-evolution-review roadmap is provided to outline the various stages of the trading scheme, including setting waste caps, establishing markets, rewarding low-waste behaviors, and conducting regular reviews.

International industrial symbiosis: Cross-border management of aggregates and construction and demolition waste between Italy and Switzerland

Yari Borbon-Galvez et al.

Summary: This study discusses an international industrial symbiosis between Switzerland and Italy, focusing on managing transport strategies, reducing external costs, and expanding the geographic range. The research shows that intermodal transport strategies can significantly reduce carbon emissions and external costs, and extend the system's coverage beyond 50 kilometers.

Quantifying the embodied carbon saving potential of recycling construction and demolition waste in the Greater Bay Area, China: Status quo and future scenarios

Ziyu Peng et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the embodied carbon saving potential of recycling construction and demolition waste, particularly focusing on the end-of-life stage of construction projects. By adopting a Life Cycle Assessment and conducting a case study in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the research simulates future carbon saving potential under different construction development scenarios, with estimates ranging from 166.34 Mt. to 894.80 Mt. by 2060. The methods proposed in this study can help achieve China's 2060 carbon neutral goal and are applicable to regions worldwide with insufficient C&D waste data.

Estimating construction waste generation in the Greater Bay Area, China using machine learning

Weisheng Lu et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a reliable method for estimating construction waste generation by analyzing various waste generation models, as reliable data remains scarce in many developing economies. By collecting data from the Greater Bay Area in China, it was found that using four machine learning models can produce acceptable results, contributing to waste management and related fields as useful references.

Self-fulfillment degree of construction and demolition waste management capability based on the Triple-balance theory: A case study of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

Bo Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the self-fulfillment degree of C&DW management capability in cities within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, finding varying levels of capability among different cities. Some cities were able to handle their own C&DW effectively, while others needed to transport surplus waste for further treatment. The findings of the research can help waste management sectors plan C&DW treatment facilities in the region and improve cross-regional mobility management.
