Simulating thermal energy community formation: Institutional enablers outplaying technological choice

Javanshir Fouladvand et al.

Summary: The success of thermal energy communities depends more on surrounding institutional conditions rather than technology selection. Providing training and allocating subsidies based on degree of environmental friendliness are key factors influencing the formation processes. Balancing all decision-making criteria is crucial for all stakeholders.

Advancing local energy transitions: A global review of government instruments supporting community energy

Renata Leonhardt et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the current state of research on government tools to support community energy, highlighting a substantial increase in research focus in recent years, with most emphasis on European national or state instruments and grid-connected communities. Four global categories of government tools for community energy support were identified, with 19 different specific instruments within these categories.

Conceptualizing community in energy systems: A systematic review of 183 definitions

Thomas Bauwens et al.

Summary: This paper provides conceptual clarity on the notion of community in the scholarly literature on energy systems. Through a systematic review and network analysis, the authors identify variations and changes in the meanings and objectives attached to the concept of community. The study reveals a shift towards a place-based understanding of community and a growing emphasis on economic objectives rather than social or political goals.

Industrial community energy systems: Simulating the role of financial incentives and societal attributes

Sina Eslamizadeh et al.

Summary: With the industrial sector consuming almost one-third of global energy demand, it is crucial to reduce carbon footprints in this sector. Transitioning to renewable electricity and implementing collective power generation within communities can effectively reduce carbon footprints and enhance energy security of industries. This research investigates the initiation and continuation of industrial community energy systems and suggests that the TAX incentive performs best in mobilizing investments and promoting the establishment of these systems, despite being the most expensive option for governments.

A techno-economic assessment of hybrid energy systems in rural Pakistan

Fahad Ali et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a rural energy system design framework and analyze the techno-economic feasibility of hybrid energy systems for rural electrification in a village in Pakistan. The results suggest that a community power system based on solar PV is the most feasible solution, and grid-integrated systems are more economical than off-grid systems. The hybrid energy system is capable of providing continuous electricity to the site 24/7.

Modelling the redistribution of benefits from joint investments in community energy projects

Sonam Norbu et al.

Summary: With the increasing interest in developing local or community energy projects, individual prosumers are able to generate, store and trade energy within the community, shifting market power from large utility companies to individual prosumers. However, developing methods to control and fairly share jointly-owned assets remains an important question in both research and practice.

Ethiopia renewable energy potentials and current state

Ashebir Dingeto Hailu et al.

Summary: Ethiopia has abundant renewable energy resources, but its energy sector is still in its early stages with most of the population relying on traditional biomass energy sources. Rural areas lack access to modern energy and have low electricity consumption per capita. Addressing energy security and diversification challenges is crucial for economic growth in Ethiopia.
