Are stakeholders ready to transform phosphorus use in food systems? A transdisciplinary study in a livestock intensive system

Julia Martin-Ortega et al.

Summary: Food systems worldwide are at risk due to disruptions in Phosphorus (P) supply and price fluctuations. The current P use is inefficient and leads to waste and pollution. This study develops a transdisciplinary scenario process to assess stakeholders' potential for transformative thinking in P use in the food system. The study uses Northern Ireland as a case study and employs Substance Flow Analysis to construct alternative visions for the future and stimulate stakeholder discussions. The study finds that most stakeholder responses are transitional or incremental rather than fundamentally transformative, but identifies deeper levers that could drive transformative change.

Restoration of Rice Ecosystem Services: 'Ecological Engineering for Pest Management' Incentives and Practices in the Mekong Delta Region of Vietnam

Finbarr G. Horgan et al.

Summary: Ecological engineering has been widely adopted by rice farmers in the Mekong Delta Region of Vietnam for pest management. The establishment of linear vegetation strips as habitat for natural enemies has resulted in reduced insecticide use and higher rice yields. However, the high dependency on government support and lack of appreciation for wildlife-related services threaten the social sustainability of the intervention. Optimizing linear strips to enhance farm incomes and reduce costs is recommended.

Ecosystem Services from Ecological Agroforestry in Brazil: A Systematic Map of Scientific Evidence

Hanna R. Schuler et al.

Summary: This study presents a systematic map of the scientific evidence related to the effects of agroforestry on ecosystem services in Brazil. The analysis reveals a significant imbalance in the scale of research, with a greater focus on the Atlantic Forest and limited studies on the Cerrado savanna, Pampa grasslands, and Pantanal wetlands. Regulating services received more attention compared to provisioning services, while cultural services were largely overlooked. Agroforestry was found to have consistent positive effects on soil quality, habitat, and food provision, but trade-offs were identified for soils and habitats.

Integrated crop-livestock systems: A sustainable land-use alternative for food production in the Brazilian Cerrado and Amazon

Julio Cesar dos Reis et al.

Summary: The study found that Brazil faces challenges in food supply and rational use of environmental resources, with the integrated crop-livestock system showing balanced economic and environmental performance, while the continuous crop system performs poorly in environmental aspects but has the highest profitability. The livestock system performs poorly in both economic and environmental outcomes.

Grazing of cover crops in integrated crop-livestock systems

A. Planisich et al.

Summary: Conventional agriculture is rapidly specializing into the management of monoculture crops, threatening crop diversity and sustainability. Grazing of cover crops in integrated crop-livestock systems could be a feasible technology to restore crop diversity. The study assessed the effects of cattle grazing on annual ryegrass production in a ryegrass-soybean rotation system, finding synergistic benefits to using ryegrass both as forage and cover crop.

Soil carbon and nitrogen stocks and the quality of soil organic matter under silvopastoral systems in the Brazilian Cerrado

Luana Larrisa de Souza Almeida et al.

Summary: The study found that the soil carbon and nitrogen stocks increased in silvopastoral systems, but were still lower than those in native vegetation. The quality of soil organic matter was protected in the most stable soil organic matter fractions. The soil microbial carbon increased during the rainy season, while the metabolic quotient increased during the dry period.

Managing eucalyptus trees in agroforestry systems: Productivity parameters and PAR transmittance

Jose Ricardo Macedo Pezzopane et al.

Summary: Agroforestry systems, including an integrated crop-livestock-forestry system (ICLF) and an integrated livestock-forest system (ILF), were evaluated for their productive characteristics and PAR transmission. The study found that ICLF had greater stem volume than ILF, with no significant differences in total biomass. Both agroforestry systems showed strong correlations between tree basal area and PAR transmission to pasture.
