Interfacial Tensions ,Solubilities ,and Transport Properties of the H2/H2O/NaCl System: A Molecular Simulation Study

W. A. van Rooijen et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics and continuous fractional component Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to fill in the gaps in thermodynamic and transport property data for hydrogen technologies. New data sets were obtained for interfacial tensions, self-diffusivities, and solubilities of hydrogen in aqueous sodium chloride solutions. The simulation results showed excellent agreement with available experimental data, with average deviations lower than 10%.

Scaled charges for ions: An improvement but not the final word for modeling electrolytes in water

S. Blazquez et al.

Summary: In this work, the use of scaled charges was discussed for developing force fields for NaCl and KCl in water. The developed models were able to accurately describe properties such as densities, structural properties, transport properties, surface tension, freezing point depression, and maximum in density. Different values of the scaled charge were found to best describe each property. The use of scaled charges can have practical advantages in describing specific experimental properties.

What is the Optimal Dipole Moment for Nonpolarizable Models of Liquids?

Miguel Jorge et al.

Summary: In classical nonpolarizable models, the correct degree of polarization for fixed-charge models to achieve the best balance of interactions and describe the energy surface of a liquid phase has been a fundamental question. Two independent approaches, QUBE and PolCA, provide consistent answers that the model's dipole moment should be approximately halfway between the gas and liquid phases. However, the estimation of the reference liquid-phase dipole requires considering both mean-field and local contributions to polarization, as continuum dielectric models are inadequate for this purpose.

Charge Transport in Water-NaCl Electrolytes with Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Oystein Gullbrekken et al.

Summary: In this study, ionic conductivity and transport numbers in electrolyte systems are calculated using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and compared with experimental results. The significance of the frame of reference is discussed when determining and comparing transport numbers. Two methods of computing ionic conductivity from equilibrium simulations are presented: the Nernst-Einstein approximation or the Onsager coefficients. The main features and differences between equilibrium and nonequilibrium simulations are discussed, and potential anomalies and critical pitfalls of using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics to determine transport properties are highlighted.

Freezing point depression of salt aqueous solutions using the Madrid-2019 model

Cintia P. Lamas et al.

Summary: Salt aqueous solutions are of great interest in various fields. However, most existing force-fields fail to accurately reproduce their behavior, including water diffusion and salt solubility. The Madrid-2019 model provides a good description of many properties, including solution densities, viscosities, and water diffusion. This study evaluates the model's performance in predicting freezing point depression, and finds that it can accurately reproduce experimental measurements for various salts and compositions.

Maximum in density of electrolyte solutions: Learning about ion-water interactions and testing the Madrid-2019 force field

L. F. Sedano et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of various salts on the temperature of maximum density (TMD) of aqueous solutions. It is found that the TMD of the solutions decreases and the density-temperature curves become flatter with the addition of salts. Among the ions studied, Na+, Ca2+, and SO42- have the largest impact on the TMD. The experimental and simulation results show good agreement, revealing the influence of different ions on the structure of water. The TMD of electrolyte solutions is suggested as a test property when developing force fields for electrolytes.

Solubilities and Transport Properties of CO2, Oxalic Acid, and Formic Acid in Mixed Solvents Composed of Deep Eutectic Solvents, Methanol, and Propylene Carbonate

Noura Dawass et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular simulations were used to compute the properties of mixed solvents composed of deep eutectic solvents (DES) and organic solvents. The results show that adding DES to the organic solvents can increase the solubilities of oxalic and formic acids, but also increases the density and viscosity of the mixed solvents. Additionally, the self-diffusivities and ionic conductivities decrease as more DES is added to the mixtures.

Melting points of water models: Current situation

S. Blazquez et al.

Summary: By calculating and studying the melting points of ice I-h using various water models, we found that none of the current models is able to simultaneously reproduce the melting temperature of ice I-h and the temperature of the maximum density at room pressure. This suggests that our knowledge of the potential energy surface of water is still incomplete and it is necessary to consider nuclear quantum effects to describe both properties simultaneously.
