?-Machine Learned Potential Energy Surfaces and Force Fields

Joel M. Bowman et al.

Summary: There has been significant progress in developing machine learned potential energy surfaces (PESs) for molecules and clusters with more than 10 atoms. However, the level of electronic structure theory is generally limited to less than the gold standard CCSD(T) level due to the number of atoms. This Perspective focuses on a Delta-machine learning method that brings DFT-based PESs close to CCSD(T) accuracy. It also explores the extension of Delta-machine learning to force fields with many-body corrections.

A Formulation of the Many-Body Expansion (MBE) for Periodic Systems: Application to Several Ice Phases

Kristina M. Herman et al.

Summary: We present a new formulation of the many-body expansion (MBE) for periodic systems and apply it to 7 ice polymorphs. The method is validated by comparing the lattice energies computed using the MBE with those obtained using periodic boundary conditions and Ewald summation. This development enables the quantification of many-body contributions to the lattice energy of ice polymorphs and provides insights into their solid-state properties.

Benchmark coupled-cluster lattice energy of crystalline benzene and assessment of multi-level approximations in the many-body expansion

Carlos H. Borca et al.

Summary: The use of many-body expansion (MBE) method, combining CCSD(T)/CBS for closest dimers and trimers and MP2 for more distant ones, shows promising results in efficiently calculating lattice energies in organic crystals. The effectiveness of MP2(+ATM) as a replacement for CCSD(T)/CBS is demonstrated. The CCSD(T)/CBS best estimate of the lattice energy at 0 K is -54.01 kJ mol(-1).

Fragment-Based Calculations of Enzymatic Thermochemistry Require Dielectric Boundary Conditions

Paige E. Bowling et al.

Summary: Electronic structure calculations on enzymes with hundreds of atoms can be costly, but fragment-based approximations provide a cost-effective solution. The many-body expansion method allows calculations on enzyme models with 500-600 atoms and compares well with benchmarks. Different boundary conditions can affect the convergence of the calculations, highlighting the need for appropriate assessments of errors in fragment-based approximations. Protocols involving three-body or two-body calculations combined with a full-system correction offer accurate results at a lower computational cost, making high-level quantum chemistry applicable to large systems.

MBX: A many-body energy and force calculator for data-driven many-body simulations

Marc Riera et al.

Summary: MBX is a C++ library that implements many-body potential energy functions (PEFs) within the many-body energy (MB-nrg) formalism. MB-nrg PEFs integrate an underlying polarizable model with explicit machine-learned representations of many-body interactions to achieve chemical accuracy from the gas to the condensed phases. MBX can be used as a standalone package or integrated with other molecular simulation software as an energy/force engine. It allows for classical and quantum molecular simulations with MB-nrg PEFs, as well as hybrid simulations combining conventional force fields and MB-nrg PEFs for diverse systems.

Machine-learning-based many-body energy analysis of argon clusters: Fit for size?

Mozhdeh Shiranirad et al.

Summary: Machine-learned potentials (MLPs) are used to bridge the gap between empirical and quantum-mechanical methods, and face the challenge of predicting many-body energy when determining system characteristics. A finely-trained MLP model successfully predicts the many-body energy of argon clusters with an error within a few meV.

q-AQUA: A Many-Body CCSD(T) Water Potential, Including Four-Body Interactions, Demonstrates the Quantum Nature of Water from Clusters to the Liquid Phase

Qi Yu et al.

Summary: Many model potential energy surfaces for water have been reported, but none are strictly based on first-principles. This study presents a new potential energy surface for water that is based on a many-body representation at the CCSD(T) level of theory up to four-body interactions. The accuracy and speed of this new potential energy surface are demonstrated for various properties, including dissociation energies, harmonic frequencies, and quantum simulations.

The many-body expansion for metals. I. The alkaline earth metals Be, Mg, and Ca

Joani Mato et al.

Summary: This study examines the many-body expansion for alkaline earth metal clusters, finding that the behavior of the clusters depends strongly on geometrical arrangement and the in situ electronic state of individual atoms. While multi-reference effects are present, there is little qualitative difference in the expansion when using single vs multi-reference methods.

Extendedtight-bindingquantum chemistry methods

Christoph Bannwarth et al.

Summary: This review discusses a family of atomistic, mostly quantum chemistry based semiempirical methods for describing large molecules in gas and condensed phase. These methods are derived from a density functional perturbation expansion and emphasize parameter availability for almost the entire periodic table, with improvements in atomic orbital basis set and interaction treatments. The methods are consistent with accurate gas phase theoretical reference data and have been extended for electronic spectra and response properties.

Apurba Nandi et al.

Summary: The study presents a machine learning approach to improve the accuracy of potential energy surfaces based on low-level density functional theory energies and gradients. By using a simple equation and fitting high-dimensional PESs with the permutationally invariant polynomial method, the approach is demonstrated to be effective for multiple molecules. Results show excellent agreement with benchmark results, even with a relatively small number of CCSD(T) energies used for training.
