Space-warp coordinate transformation for efficient ionic force calculations in quantum Monte Carlo

Kousuke Nakano et al.

Summary: In this study, the accuracy of all-electron variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and lattice-regularized diffusion Monte Carlo (LRDMC) forces for various mono- and heteronuclear dimers is benchmarked. The results show that the LRDMC forces with appropriate regularization techniques improve the VMC forces, indicating the value of computing the DMC forces beyond VMC. The computational costs of QMC energy and forces scale differently, but applying the space-warp coordinate transformation (SWCT) makes the ratio of costs independent of the atomic number.

Surrogate Hessian accelerated structural optimization for stochastic electronic structure theories

Juha Tiihonen et al.

Summary: This paper presents an energy-based method for efficient structural optimization with stochastic electronic structure theories. The method utilizes robust line-search energy minimization in reduced parameter space and surrogate theory to maximize statistical efficiency and retain controllable accuracy. The authors demonstrate the effectiveness and wide applicability of the method by finding the minimum DMC energy structures of selected aromatic molecules.

Phonons of metallic hydrogen with quantum Monte Carlo

Kevin K. Ly et al.

Summary: This work proposes a simple scheme to perform phonon calculations with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods and applies it to metallic hydrogen. The conventional method of calculating force constants in metallic hydrogen is computationally expensive due to its energy and length scales, as well as statistical noise inherent in QMC methods. The authors demonstrate an alternate approach that is nearly 100 times more efficient in resolving the force constants required for calculating the phonon spectrum in the harmonic approximation, requiring only the calculation of atomic forces without significant programmatic modification.

Energy Derivatives in Real-Space Diffusion Monte Carlo

Jesse van Rhijn et al.

Summary: In this work, unbiased and finite-variance estimators of energy derivatives for real-space diffusion Monte Carlo calculations within the fixed-node approximation are presented. The derivative d(lambda)E is shown to be consistent with the energy dependence E(lambda) computed with the same time step. The issue of divergent variance of derivatives related to variations of the nodes of the wave function is addressed through regularization techniques and demonstrated using a particle-in-a-box toy model.

Data-driven simulation and characterisation of gold nanoparticle melting

ClaudioW Zeni et al.

Summary: Efficient theoretical methods for the structural analysis of nanoparticles are crucial, and this study demonstrates the use of machine-learning force fields and a data-driven approach to investigate the thermodynamic stability and melting process of gold nanoparticles. By developing machine learning force fields based on Density Functional Theory calculations, the study accurately predicts nanoparticle melting temperatures and characterizes the solid-liquid phase change mechanism.

Enhanced Surface Ligands Reactivity of Metal Clusters by Bulky Ligands for Controlling Optical and Chiral Properties

Guocheng Deng et al.

Summary: Surface ligands play critical roles in determining the surface properties of metal clusters. Modulating the properties and controlling the surface structure of clusters through surface-capping-agent displacement is challenging. This work provides a new insight into modulation of the optical properties of metal clusters and atomically precise homochiral clusters for specific applications are obtained.

Toward quantum Monte Carlo forces on heavier ions: Scaling properties

Juha Tiihonen et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the accuracy and computational cost of Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) forces, finding that the force uncertainty grows more rapidly as the effective pseudopotential valence charge Z(eff) increases, with a best case cost scaling relationship of approximately Z(eff)^(6.5(3)) for diffusion Monte Carlo. Additionally, the accessible system size decreases with decreasing Z(eff), regardless of model assumptions or the use of variance-reduction techniques.
