Organic Molecules in Interstellar Space: Latest Advances

Michel Guelin et al.

Summary: The interstellar medium has been found to host a wide range of molecular species, including complex organic compounds, in various regions such as interstellar clouds, the Milky Way, nearby galaxies, and distant quasars. The advancements in sub-millimetre and radio facilities have enabled the detection of these molecules, with recent observations revealing the presence of 30 prebiotic molecules in a dust-enshrouded interstellar cloud and the identification of new molecular species in a distant spiral galaxy and a quasar. The chemical composition of gas in distant galaxies is similar to that of nearby interstellar clouds, suggesting the presence of aromatic rings and complex organic molecules that could be precursors to RNA nucleobases.

Reactivity Trends in the Gas-Phase Addition of Acetylene to the N-Protonated Aryl Radical Cations of Pyridine, Aniline, and Benzonitrile

Oisin J. Shiels et al.

Summary: This study investigates gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of acetylene with nine aromatic distonic sigma-type radical cations derived from various ions. The results show that rate coefficients vary with the position of the radical, and reactivity trends can be rationalized based on the stability of prereactive complexes.

The biological legacy of sulfur: A roadmap to the future

Kenneth R. Olson

Summary: The study emphasizes the essential role of evolution in the field of biology and the importance of choosing the right animal model for research. It also highlights the significance of sulfur in evolution and the parallel mechanisms of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive sulfur species (RSS), suggesting alternative approaches to understanding oxidant/antioxidant pathways. Ultimately, the coexistence of oxygen and reduced sulfur, along with the design of physiologically relevant experiments, are crucial considerations in scientific research.

Vacuum Ultraviolet Photoionization Induced Proton Migration and Formation of a New C-N Bond in Pyridine Clusters Revealed by Infrared Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry

Jun-Ying Feng et al.

Summary: The structures and reactions of pyridine cluster cations generated at specific ionization energy were investigated using infrared action spectroscopy. Proton and deuteron migration during formation and dissociation of the cluster cations were observed, with reactions involving alpha-distonic cation intermediates and proton migration pathways, respectively. Infrared spectra indicated that the clusters consist of a core covalently bound with additional pyridines via hydrogen bonds and/or weak dispersive interactions.

Spectroscopic evidence of the C-N covalent bond formed between two interstellar molecules (ISM): acrylonitrile and ammonia

Fufei Sun et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical calculations show that AN and NH3 tend to form a single-ring hydrogen-bonded structure, but after ionization, a new C-N covalent bond is directly formed between AN and NH3, influenced by VUV radiation. Furthermore, in cationic complexes, the C-N bond prefers to form between AN and NH3.
