AChE mRNA expression as a possible novel biomarker for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease and Alzheimer's disease, and its association with oxidative stress

Mesut Isik et al.

Summary: Oxidative metabolic reactions and their by-products play a role in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study found that levels of protein oxidation and mRNA expression of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were increased in patients with AD and CAD. Plasma total thiol levels were decreased in these patients compared to the control group. The results suggest that increased AChE release contributes to the formation of neurotoxic beta-amyloid plaques, leading to neurodegenerative diseases.

Oxidative Stress and Changes of Important Metabolic Gene Expressions as a Potential Biomarker in the Diagnosis of Atherosclerosis in Leukocytes

Summary: This study investigated the role of PSEN1, CAT, and GST in the prediction, diagnosis, and therapy of metabolic disorders. The results showed significant differences in the expression of PSEN1, CAT, and GST between the patient group and the control group. The expression of PSEN1 in leukocytes was twice as high in patients with CVD compared to the control group. The activity of GST, CAT, and PON1 also differed significantly between the patient groups and the control group.
