Trends in survival for cancer patients aged 65 years or over from 1995 to 2014 in the United States: A population-based study

Lan An et al.

Summary: The survival rate for elderly cancer patients in the United States has slightly improved from 1995 to 2014, potentially due to advancements in treatment. Except for patients aged 85 and above, the cancer survival rate has improved for elderly patients in all age groups. For all types of cancer, the relative survival rate for localized stage improved from 84.7% to 86.7% and for distant stage improved from 12.4% to 18.7% comparing 1995-1999 with 2010-2014. The trends in stage distribution and treatment rate for all cancers combined remained relatively stable.

Significance of MYB and NTRK Expression in Head and Neck Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma

Theodoros Pantazopoulos et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the immunohistochemical and molecular characteristics of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and their correlation with clinical outcomes. The results showed that NTRK expression was associated with worse survival, indicating that NTRK is a negative prognostic factor. MYB expression did not significantly affect survival. Based on these findings, NTRK inhibitors and MYB-targeted therapeutic agents could be considered for the treatment of ACC patients.

Epidemiology, outcomes, and prognostic factors in submandibular gland carcinomas: a national DAHANCA study

Marie Westergaard-Nielsen et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to report the incidence, histological subtypes, survival rates, and prognostic factors of salivary gland carcinoma based on a national cohort. All Danish patients with submandibular gland carcinoma diagnosed from 1990 to 2015 were included and analyzed. The study found that the most frequent subtype was adenoid cystic carcinoma and that advanced stage had a negative impact on survival rates.

Proton therapy and/or helical tomotherapy for locally advanced sinonasal skull base adenoid cystic carcinoma: Focus on experience of the Institut Curie and review of literature

Antoine Mavrikios et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 18 patients with locally advanced sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinomas (SNACC) who were treated with proton therapy and/or helical tomotherapy. After a median follow-up of 52 months, the 5-year OS, LRRFS, DMFS, and DFS rates were 47%, 50%, 39%, and 33% respectively. The results of this study indicate that proton therapy and helical tomotherapy are effective and safe methods for treating locally advanced SNACC.

Recent Advances, Systemic Therapy, and Molecular Targets in Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Head and Neck

Ina Dewenter et al.

Summary: With an incidence of 3-4.5 cases per million, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the head and neck is a common tumor of the parotid and sublingual salivary glands. Radical surgical resection with tumor-free margins remains the gold standard in treating ACC, but there are also new treatment options available such as particle radiation therapy and systemic molecular biological approaches. The review aims to investigate the long-term experience of diagnosis and treatment, as well as risk and prognostic factors for ACC.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (AdCC): A Clinical Survey of a Large Patient Cohort

Mark Zupancic et al.

Summary: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a rare heterogeneous disease that is difficult to diagnose and predict prognosis, making treatment challenging. A retrospective study on a large cohort of AdCC patients in the head and neck revealed that early disease stage and major salivary gland subsite were favorable prognostic factors, while perineural invasion and radical surgery did not significantly correlate with survival. These findings have important implications for prognostic assessment of AdCC.

Summary: A prognostic nomogram was developed in this study to assess the overall survival of patients under 40 with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck. The nomogram, based on clinical and survival data, can predict the 10-year survival rate and showed good validation results in the training and validation sets. This nomogram could assist clinicians in accurately evaluating the prognosis of young patients.

Role of postoperative radiotherapy in resected adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck

Seo Hee Choi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the data of head and neck adenoid cystic carcinoma (HNACC) patients and found that postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) can significantly reduce local failure rate and improve survival in high-risk patients. Particularly, patients with positive margins, T2-4 stage disease, and minor salivary gland tumors benefited more from PORT.

Survival and prognosis of metastatic head and neck adenoid cystic carcinoma

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of patients with metastatic head and neck adenoid cystic carcinoma (HNACC). The results showed that smoking history, disease-free interval, number and sites of metastases, and systemic therapy were associated with overall survival. Non-smokers, disease-free interval >= 3 years, and lung metastasis were identified as favorable prognostic factors. Local therapy could prolong survival in patients with localized disease.

Summary: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor derived mainly from the salivary glands that displays contradictory characteristics of slow growth but aggressive progression. ACC of the head and neck (ACCHN) has a propensity for perineural invasion and is challenging to treat. This review aims to provide updated insights into ACCHN and discuss imaging diagnosis, pathological features, and therapeutic strategies.

Epidemiology and prediction model of patients with carcinosarcoma in the United States

Mingjing Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that the incidence, prevalence, and mortality of carcinosarcoma have increased over the past decades, with a rapid rise in the incidence of localized stage reflecting improved early detection. The prognosis of carcinosarcoma remains poor, emphasizing the need to explore targeted cancer control treatments. The established nomogram has good predictive capacity and assists in clinical decision-making.

Summary: This retrospective study examines treatment paradigms and prognostic factors in laryngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC). It suggests that histologic grade may be a more significant prognostic factor than American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage for survival in these patients. The study also indicates that treatment with surgery and radiation may not provide additional survival advantage compared to just definitive surgery.
