Biomechanical effect of metal augment and bone graft on cup stability for acetabular reconstruction of total hip arthroplasty in hip dysplasia: a finite element analysis

Yuzhu Wang et al.

Summary: This study simulated the effects of autologous bone graft (BG) and metal (Ti6Al4V) augment (MA) on acetabular bone defect models of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in total hip arthroplasty (THA) and evaluated the shell stability using finite element analysis. The results showed that MA resulted in higher contact stress and micromotion between the shell and host bone compared to BG, but the micromotion at the interface between MA and cup was reduced.

Trabecular metal versus non-trabecular metal acetabular components for acetabular revision surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Xianyue Shen et al.

Summary: This study compared the cup survival and the incidence of adverse events associated with the use of trabecular metal (TM) and non-TM cups for acetabular revision surgery. The results showed no significant difference in cup survival between the two types of cups. Overall, TM cups had fewer adverse events, but the difference was not significant. The incidence of aseptic loosening and infection was significantly lower for TM cups, while the incidence of dislocation was significantly higher.

Acetabular Revision Arthroplasty Based on 3-Dimensional Reconstruction Technology Using Jumbo Cups

Xianyue Shen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in cup coverage and hip center of rotation in acetabular defects treated with acetabular revision using jumbo cups. The results showed that using jumbo cups for acetabular revision led to decreased cup coverage and an increase in hip center of rotation. The elevation of the hip center of rotation was significantly higher in patients with severe acetabular defects compared to other patients.

Incidence of Osteolysis and Aseptic Loosening Following Metal-on-Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene Hip Arthroplasty A Systematic Review of Studies with Up to 15-Year Follow-up

Hannah Prock-Gibbs et al.

Summary: The study compared the incidence of osteolysis, aseptic loosening, and revision following the use of HXLPE or CPE in medium to long-term follow-up in primary THA. Results showed that HXLPE liners reduced the incidence of these complications compared to CPE, regardless of age and implant fixation method.

Application of Novel Design Bone Grafting for Treatment of Segmental Acetabular Rim Defects During Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty

Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study developed efficient techniques for treating acetabular bone deficiency using novel graft structures. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model, based on a healthy patient without any peri-acetabular bony defect, was used to evaluate the mechanical performances of different grafts. Among the structures, the mortise-tenone structure was found to provide better relative micromotion and suitable biomechanical properties, making it the optimal treatment option for acetabulum reconstruction.

Summary: This study evaluated differences in rotation center, cup coverage, and biomechanical effects between conventional and anatomical techniques for acetabular cup insertion. Results showed that anatomical technique had better performance in terms of rotation center shift, coverage rate, and micromotion.

Optimizing the Femoral Offset for Restoring Physiological Hip Muscle Function in Patients With Total Hip Arthroplasty

Xiangjun Hu et al.

Summary: This study found that changes in FO following THA are significantly correlated with changes in hip muscle moment arms, with an increase of 2-3 mm in FO improving abductor and external rotator function. Accurate surgical planning with optimal FO reconstruction is essential for restoring normal hip muscle function in THA patients.
