Ellagic acid as a potent anticancer drug: A comprehensive review on in vitro, in vivo, in silico, and drug delivery studies

Arash Mohammadinejad et al.

Summary: Ellagic acid, a polyphenol or micronutrient found in various vegetables and fruits, has shown promising anticancer activities by modulating gene expression related to apoptosis, proliferation, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Utilizing specific carriers can enhance the stable release and delivery of ellagic acid, while in silico analysis demonstrates its potential to interact tightly with protein binding pocket residues in deep cavities.

Identification of ellagic acid and urolithins as natural inhibitors of Aβ25-35-induced neurotoxicity and the mechanism predication using network pharmacology analysis and molecular docking

Hui-Lin Li et al.

Summary: The dietary polyphenol Ellagic acid (EA) and its metabolites known as urolithins have been proposed as potential natural agents for the early intervention of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study demonstrated the neuroprotective effects of EA and urolithins, particularly UM5 and UM6, in attenuating A beta(25-35)-induced neuronal injury and promoting neurite outgrowth. Furthermore, a network pharmacology analysis suggested that the activation of PI3K-Akt and the inhibition of MAPK may be involved in the anti-AD action of EA and urolithins.

Novel Roles of MT1-MMP and MMP-2: Beyond the Extracellular Milieu

Deanna Maybee et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the subcellular localization and intracellular roles of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), focusing on membrane-type-1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2). The article highlights the diverse subcellular localizations of these enzymes and their involvement in cell migration, gene expression, and tumor migration and invasion. The authors suggest that targeting nuclear MT1-MMP or MMP-2 may lead to the development of new therapies for cancer and other diseases.

Both Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 and MAPK Signaling Pathway Attenuate PI3K/AKT via Suppression of Reactive Oxygen Species in Human Pluripotent Stem Cells

Petr Fojtik et al.

Summary: Mild hypoxia attenuates the pluripotency-promoting PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in human pluripotent stem cells compared to normoxic conditions, due to the downregulation of ROS. In addition, the MAPK pathway also downregulates ROS and attenuates the PI3K/AKT signaling via a novel interaction between these pathways. This ROS-mediated regulatory circuit may have implications for enhancing cultivation and differentiation protocols for hPSCs, as well as providing insights into cancer stem cell signaling regulation.

Serum albumin levels and inflammation

Arik Sheinenzon et al.

Summary: This study examined the correlation between albumin levels and inflammatory indices in hospitalized patients, showing negative correlations between albumin and CRP/white blood cell levels and positive correlations with platelets/hemoglobin levels. The strongest negative correlation between albumin and CRP was found in the Internal Medicine departments. Linear regression analysis revealed a minor effect of CRP on albumin levels, particularly at very high CRP levels. Further exploration of the mechanisms underlying this negative correlation is needed.
