A new approach for simultaneously improved osseointegration and antibacterial activity by electrochemical deposition of graphene nanolayers over titania nanotubes

Seyed Yahya Rahnamaee et al.

Summary: Simultaneous enhancement of osseointegration and bacterial infection prohibition through surface modifications is a challenging but promising approach. A multifunctional surface coating composed of graphene nanolayers and hierarchical well-aligned TiO2 nanotubes (cRTNT) has been shown to significantly improve the biological properties of implants, including enhanced cell activity and reduced bacterial infection.

Chitosan films as pH-responsive sustained release systems of naturally occurring antifungal volatile compounds

R. Heras-Mozos et al.

Summary: Reversible imine bonds were used to develop pH-dependent antifungal systems by grafting benzaldehyde and citral onto chitosan films. The formation of imine bonds was confirmed, and the incorporation of aldehyde units into the chitosan polymer was estimated. The study found that acidic media favored the release of aldehydes, with imine bonds from benzaldehyde being more prone to hydrolysis.

Chitosan/poly(4-vinylpyridine) coatings formed on AgNPs-decorated titanium

Lukasz Pawlowski et al.

Summary: The study investigated the electrophoretic deposition of chitosan/poly(4-vinylpyridine) coatings on titanium substrates decorated with silver nanoparticles. The results showed that the best coatings were formed at 10V voltage and 0.1% (w/w) P4VP content, indicating potential application of these pH-sensitive coatings in surface modification of titanium implants.

Preparation and Evaluation of Chitosan/PVA Based Hydrogel Films Loaded with Honey for Wound Healing Application

Hitesh Chopra et al.

Summary: In this study, chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel films loaded with honey were developed for potential wound healing applications. The films were evaluated for their physical and mechanical properties, as well as their antimicrobial performance against Staphylococcus aureus. The results demonstrated the potential of these films as wound dressings and suggested the need for further in vivo experiments to evaluate their clinical efficacy.

Nanotubular Oxide Layer Formed on Helix Surfaces of Dental Screw Implants

Magdalena Jazdzewska et al.

Summary: Surface modification using oxidation of the Ti-13Nb-13Zr titanium alloy was studied to improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of metal implant materials. Nanotubular oxide layers with differences in surface topography were found. Corrosion tests indicated higher corrosion current and less noble corrosion potential due to incomplete surface coverage and pitting, highlighting the need for improved oxidation parameters in future research.

Aseptic and septic prosthetic joint loosening: Impact of biomaterial wear on immune cell function, inflammation, and infection

Nicholas A. Hodges et al.

Summary: The success of total joint replacements has led to increased use of arthroplasty in younger patients, but over 10% require revisions due to implant failure, with loosening caused by wear debris being a significant factor. Loosening can be aseptic or septic, with subclinical biofilms potentially being overlooked in diagnosis. Wear debris inhibits the immune response, contributing to implant failure and osteolysis.
