Rapid X-Ray-Based 3-D Finite Element Modeling of Medial Knee Joint Cartilage Biomechanics During Walking

Sana Jahangir et al.

Summary: Finite element modeling is a popular method for analyzing knee joint mechanics and mechanisms leading to osteoarthritis. This study developed a framework to generate accurate biomechanical knee joint models directly from X-ray imaging, bringing FE modeling closer to clinical use.

The mechanical properties of tibiofemoral and patellofemoral articular cartilage in compression depend on anatomical regions

Heng Li et al.

Summary: The articular cartilage in the knee joint can be anatomically divided into different regions, with distinct mechanical properties observed among these regions. Histological analysis and the use of constitutive models help to explain the differences in cartilage properties, with the Fung and Ogden models found to be suitable for representing the effects of strain rate on stiffening.

Elastic, Dynamic Viscoelastic and Model-Derived Fibril-Reinforced Poroelastic Mechanical Properties of Normal and Osteoarthritic Human Femoral Condyle Cartilage

Mohammadhossein Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: The study characterized the properties of femoral condyle cartilage using modern computational models, finding that alterations in FRPE properties were not evident in mild to moderate cartilage degradation but were drastic in severe degradation. The study also revealed that the FRPE properties of femoral condyle cartilage were associated with the collagen network and proteoglycan matrix.

Functional and structural properties of human patellar articular cartilage in osteoarthritis

Mikko T. Nissinen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in fibril-reinforced poroelastic material parameters of human patellar cartilage at different stages of osteoarthritis. It found significant differences in these parameters and their associations with proteoglycan content, collagen fibril orientation angle, and optical retardation. Additionally, reductions in the initial fibril network modulus and permeability were observed in advanced osteoarthritis samples, showing correlations with structural and functional changes in the cartilage.
