Effect of types of ankle-foot orthoses on energy expenditure metrics during walking in individuals with stroke: a systematic review

Aliyeh Daryabor et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) on the energy expenditure metrics of walking in stroke survivors. The review finds that AFOs may have an immediate positive effect on energy expenditure metrics, but further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of gait training using AFOs and to compare different types of orthoses.

Effect of outdoor footwear bending stiffness on metatarsophalangeal joint kinematics, kinetics, and energy balance during level and uphill walking

Giuseppe Zullo et al.

Summary: The study aimed to measure shoe bending stiffness and investigate its impact on metatarsophalangeal joint biomechanics during walking. Results showed that both shoe bending stiffness and walking slope had significant effects on MPJ biomechanics, providing important insights for the design of outdoor footwear.

Multiplanar Stiffness of Commercial Carbon Composite Ankle-Foot Orthoses

Benjamin R. Shuman et al.

Summary: This study quantified the rotational stiffness of thirteen commercial nonarticulated carbon composite ankle-foot orthoses. The results showed the range of stiffness in sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes. These findings can assist clinicians in choosing devices with the desired stiffness properties for individual patients.

Satisfaction with ankle foot orthoses in individuals withCharcot-Marie-Tooth disease

Riccardo Zuccarino et al.

Summary: The study found that over one-third of individuals with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease were dissatisfied with the appearance, comfort, and pain associated with ankle foot orthoses. However, their ratings of orthotic services were generally positive. This indicates that there is still room for improvement in AFO development.

Evaluating cost function criteria in predicting healthy gait

K. Veerkamp et al.

Summary: This study developed a combined, weighted cost function to predict healthy gait by minimizing various physiologically-based criteria. Optimizing each criterion separately showed their individual contributions to different aspects of gait, while the optimally weighted combined cost function provided improved overall agreement with experimental data. Careful weighting of various optimization criteria is essential in predicting healthy gait.

Understanding the effects of quantitatively prescribing passive-dynamic ankle-foot orthosis bending stiffness for individuals after stroke

Corey Koller et al.

Summary: Quantitatively prescribed PD-AFO can improve peak paretic plantar flexion moment for individuals after stroke, but the effects vary among individuals. Future research should focus on the effects of faster walking speeds and long-term use, as well as conduct larger-scale studies to optimize orthosis-patient matching for all AFO designs.

Validation of forward simulations to predict the effects of bilateral plantarflexor weakness on gait

N. F. J. Waterval et al.

Summary: The study validated a predictive simulation framework for walking with bilateral plantarflexor weakness and showed a quadratic relationship between plantarflexor strength and walking energy cost and speed. The simulations indicated that pathological gait features emerge especially when bilateral plantarflexor weakness exceeds 60%.

Individual stiffness optimization of dorsal leaf spring ankle-foot orthoses in people with calf muscle weakness is superior to standard bodyweight-based recommendations

Niels F. J. Waterval et al.

Summary: The study showed that in individuals with calf muscle weakness, the current supplier recommendations for the stiffness level of the ankle-foot orthoses are often too stiff, achieving only 80% of the energy cost reduction compared to the experimentally optimized stiffness. It is recommended to experimentally optimize the stiffness to maximize treatment outcomes.
