Tempo and drivers of plant diversification in the European mountain system

Jan Smycka et al.

Summary: The authors used full-plastome phylogenomics and multiclade comparative models to reconstruct the tempo and drivers of six European Alpine angiosperm lineages. They found that speciation events were driven by geographic divergence and bedrock shifts, while diversification rates remained steady.

Pervasive hybridization during evolutionary radiation of Rhododendron subgenus Hymenanthes in mountains of southwest China

Yazhen Ma et al.

Summary: Hybridization plays a significant role in generating species diversity in mountainous ecosystems. In the case of Rhododendron subgenus Hymenanthes in southwest China, extensive genomic data suggests that hybridization was involved in its evolutionary radiation. The study found evidence of widespread hybridization events within and between different clades and subclades, indicating that hybridization occurred both early and late during the diversification process.

Assembly dynamics of East Asian subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests: New insights from the dominant Fagaceae trees

Lisi Hai et al.

Summary: This study explores the evolution and formation of subtropical East Asian evergreen broadleaved forests through the analysis of dominant Fagaceae species. The research reveals that high precipitation in summer and low temperature in winter are the key climatic factors influencing the distribution of this biome. The study also highlights the time lag between species invasion and becoming dominant within the region.

Diversification of East Asian subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests over the last 8 million years

Jun-Wei Ye et al.

Summary: The evolution of subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests (EBLFs) in East Asia is complex and interesting. Most dominant species in EBLFs originated after the late Miocene, ca. 8 million years ago. Evergreen relict genera diverged primarily during the late Miocene-Pliocene boundary or the late Pliocene, with some divergence occurring during the Pleistocene. Geo-climatic changes over the past 8 million years have triggered the origins of dominant EBLF species and provided refugia for evergreen relict genera. Genetic studies suggest three pulsed phases of evolution at the genus, species, and population levels.

Tectonic framework and evolution of the Taiwan Orogen: A revisit

Huang PoHung et al.

Summary: The Taiwan Orogen formed since the Late Miocene as a result of collision between the Eurasian margin and the North Luzon Arc system. It is an ideal location for studying young orogenic systems and the process of arc-continent collision. The Taiwan Orogen is divided into six tectonic units, including basins, fold-thrust belts, terranes, melange belts, molasse basins and arc systems. The evolution of the Taiwan Orogen can be divided into four stages: subduction, rifting, subduction, and collision. The Taiwan Orogen is a special case where the arc-continent collision was triggered by the movement of the adjacent Philippine Sea Plate.

Plastid phylogenomic insights into relationships of all flowering plant families

Hong-Tao Li et al.

Summary: The study compiled the largest dataset of angiosperm plastomes to date, resulting in a phylogenetic tree that is largely congruent with previous plastid genomic analyses but with greater clade support. The research provided strong resolution for many interordinal and interfamilial relationships within core eudicots, but relationships among the five major clades of Mesangiospermae remain unresolved despite increased sampling.

Distinct late Pleistocene subtropical-tropical divergence revealed by fifteen low-copy nuclear genes in a dominant species in South-East China

Jun-Wei Ye et al.

Summary: Genetic divergence in East Asia, particularly between subtropical and tropical regions, has been largely ignored compared to temperate-subtropical divergence. By studying the evolutionary history of the dominant species Lindera aggregata, researchers found distinct subtropical-tropical divergence since the late Pleistocene, influenced more by current climate differences than by geographical distance. This suggests that climate plays a key role in shaping genetic differentiation in plant populations.
