Controls of REY enrichment in the early Cambrian phosphorites

Hongjie Zhang et al.

Summary: Rare earth elements and yttrium (REYs) are crucial for high-tech and green-energy industries. Phosphorites with extraordinary REY enrichment have been found, but the controls of REY enrichment are not well understood. This study investigates different types of phosphorites in the Yangtze Block of South China and suggests that diagenetic alteration and fluctuating oxic-suboxic seawater conditions may be responsible for the REY enrichment.

Enrichment and sources of REY in phosphate fractions: Constraints from the leaching of REY-rich deep-sea sediments

Jiangbo Ren et al.

Summary: Research on REY-rich deep-sea sediments has revealed that the enrichment of REY is closely related to phosphate components, contradicting the low REY content in marine phosphorites. The phosphate components in deep-sea sediments have much higher RREY and RREY/P2O5 values compared to marine phosphorites. The REY-rich phosphates inherit the primary REY pattern of seawater and become the major REY budget on the seabed. The non-phosphate components exhibit strong terrigenous attributes, indicating a low sedimentation rate in the study area.

Geochemistry of apatite individuals in Zhijin phosphorites, South China: Insight into the REY sources and diagenetic enrichment

Haiying Yang et al.

Summary: Based on the early Cambrian REY-rich phosphorite from Zhijin, South China, this study analyzed the characteristics of apatite individuals. It was found that terrigenous clastic apatites have the highest REY levels, while authigenic/diagenetic apatites exhibit higher REY concentrations.

Sources of rare earth elements and yttrium in the early Cambrian phosphorites in Zhijin, southwest China

Shengwei Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the elemental geochemistry and Sr-Nd isotopes of phosphorites in the Zhijin phosphorite ore area in Guizhou province, China. The results suggest that the REY enrichment in Zhijin phosphorites is the result of contributions from both seawater and terrestrial sources, with a significant influence from continental weathering. The study provides a new perspective on the relationship between granite weathering and marine REY deposition.

Heterogeneous REE plus Y distribution in Early Paleozoic shelly phosphorites: Implications for enrichment mechanisms

Kaarel Lumiste et al.

Summary: The study found that Early Paleozoic shelly phosphorites of the Baltica paleocontinent experienced enrichment of REE + Y during diagenesis. The distribution of REE + Y in phosphatic shells and clasts is heterogeneous, with the highest concentrations found on the outer margins.

Enrichment of rare earth elements in the early Cambrian Zhijin phosphorite deposit, SW China: Evidence from francolite micro-petrography and geochemistry

Zeyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The Zhijin phosphorite deposit is a giant rare earth element deposit from the early Cambrian period, primarily enriched in heavy REEs and contained in apatite. Petrographic observations and microscopic analysis reveal that the francolite grains are composed of nano-apatite crystals, capturing abundant REEs during early diagenesis.

REY enrichment mechanisms in the early Cambrian phosphorite from South China

Haiying Yang et al.

Summary: The research found that REY in the Zhijin phosphorite mainly exists in apatites by isomorphous substitution, adsorbed by Fe-/Mn oxides/hydroxides or organic matters. Nd and Ce-anom plots indicate lower sedimentation rates of REY, allowing sufficient time for REY absorption in seawater. Apart from variations in ocean chemistry, constrained paleogeography provided a suitable space for REY entering apatite crystals.

Hydrothermal activity during the formation of REY-rich phosphorites in the early Cambrian Gezhongwu Formation, Zhijin, South China: A micro- and nano-scale mineralogical study

Jieqi Xing et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of late hydrothermal activity on the marine sedimentary phosphorites in the early Cambrian Gezhongwu Formation in South China, providing direct mineralogical evidence of the later hydrothermal activity. The late hydrothermal activity altered the REY patterns of certain minerals in the phosphorites.

Phosphorite generative processes around the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary in South China: An integrated study of Mo and phosphate O isotopic compositions

Haiying Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated large phosphorite deposits in Central Guizhou near the PC/C boundary through an integrated dataset of Mo and phosphate O isotopes, carbonate C and O isotopes, geology, petrology, and geochemistry. Results show that the REY-enriched phosphorite formed in the early Cambrian, accompanied by increased terrigenous weathering fluxes and decreased upwelling water input. Additionally, geological records and geochemical characteristics indicate seawater oxidation in the later Ediacaran and complete oxygenation in the early Cambrian.
