High Incidence of Mechanically Assisted Crevice Corrosion at 10 Years in Non-Cemented, Non-Recalled, Contemporary Total Hip Arthroplasties

Brian J. McGrory

Summary: At 10-year follow-up, at least 22% of non-cemented total hip arthroplasties presented with symptomatic mechanically assisted crevice corrosion (MACC). Symptoms and adverse local tissue reactions were each present about one-half of the time, and 59% of those with documented MACC underwent revision surgery.

True Cumulative Incidence of and Risk Factors for Hip Dislocation within 2 Years After Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty Due to Osteoarthritis A Nationwide Population-Based Study from the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register

Lars L. Hermansen et al.

Summary: The true 2-year cumulative incidence of dislocation after primary THAs performed in Denmark between 2010 and 2014 was found to be 3.5%. Age, sex, ASA score, head size and type, fixation method, and surgical approach were identified as independent significant factors for dislocation. Comprehensive search algorithms are needed to accurately report complications in national registers.

Fretting and corrosion of metal liners from modular dual mobility constructs A RETRIEVAL ANALYSIS

K. J. Hemmerling et al.

Summary: Fretting was present on 88% of the retrieved liners, and corrosion was present on 97%. The most common area of fretting was at the taper's lip between the lip and dome regions. In cases where periprosthetic tissues were examined, macrophages and particles reflecting an inflammatory reaction to corrosion debris were found in association with components with high corrosion scores.
