A Bayesian hierarchical age model for optical dating of single grains of quartz

Bo Li et al.

Summary: In optical dating, the last sunlight exposure of sediment samples is determined by dividing the equivalent dose (De) by the dose rate. This study proposes an empirical Bayesian hierarchical age model (BHAM) that integrates the full distribution of single-grain De values, measurement uncertainties, beta-dose heterogeneity, and outlier detection. Validation tests using luminescence measurements and dose rates obtained from quartz samples show that the BHAM is a robust and flexible approach suitable for sediments in various depositional settings.

Quantitative beta autoradiography of a heterogeneous granulite sample and implications for luminescence dating

L. Martin et al.

Summary: The heterogeneity of beta dose rate is a known source of uncertainty in OSL ages. In this study, a method for quantitative and high sensitivity autoradiographic imaging of beta dose rates is presented. The method is demonstrated using heterogeneous granulite rock samples. The results are calibrated and validated using gamma irradiation and Monte Carlo simulation, and the dose rate distributions in different mineral phases are determined.

Bayesian analysis of De distributions in optical dating: Towards a robust method for dealing with outliers

Bo Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a Bayesian method is introduced to detect and account for outliers in single-grain optical dating, allowing for more accurate estimation of equivalent dose values for the target population. The Bayesian outlier model (BOM) is found to be effective in identifying outliers associated with undesirable luminescence properties or contaminant grains, thus improving the accuracy of final De and age determination.

Beta dose heterogeneity in sediment samples measured using a Timepix pixelated detector and its implications for optical dating of individual mineral grains

Xiao Fu et al.

Summary: Single-grain optical dating is widely used for estimating the ages of Quaternary sediments. Understanding the sources that affect the dispersion of equivalent dose estimates from individual grain measurements is crucial for accurate age determination. This study demonstrates the use of Timepix, a pixelated detector, to measure beta emissions and determine beta microdosimetry in natural sediment samples. The results show that the estimates of beta dose rate are heterogeneous, leading to overdispersion in the single-grain dose distributions.

Investigating the palaeoenvironmental context of Late Pleistocene human dispersals into Southeast Asia: a review of stable isotope applications

Meghan S. McAllister et al.

Summary: This article reviews the applications of stable isotope analysis in studying Late Pleistocene archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Despite being in the early stages of development in the region and facing challenges related to diagenetic controls in hot and humid environments, stable isotope techniques have shown potential in providing insights into the environmental context of hominin dispersal. Limited research has already demonstrated the usefulness of stable isotope analysis in understanding the role of the environment in the timing and nature of human dispersals in Southeast Asia.
