Global occurrence and aquatic hazards of antipsychotics in sewage influents, effluent discharges and surface waters

Adam R. Wronski et al.

Summary: Despite limited knowledge on aquatic hazards caused by pharmaceuticals in surface waters, this study examines the occurrence and potential environmental risks of antipsychotics in wastewater effluent and surface waters. Using probabilistic environmental exposure distributions (EEDs) and therapeutic hazard values (THVs), the study finds diverse exceedances of THVs for different antipsychotics, with chlorprothixene and flupentixol posing significant risks in surface waters. The study highlights the need for further research on the environmental chemistry and toxicology of understudied antipsychotics.

High Concentrations of Pharmaceuticals in a Nigerian River Catchment

Olatayo M. Ogunbanwo et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical contamination of the environment is a global problem, and this study monitored the occurrence of high concentrations of pharmaceuticals in water bodies in Lagos State, Nigeria. Sewage effluent was identified as the main source of river pollution, but there are also unregulated sources that need further investigation. The findings highlight the serious issue of pharmaceutical pollution in Nigeria's freshwater environment and call for management efforts to address this problem.

Haloperidol alters the behavioral, hematological and biochemical parameters of freshwater African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822)

Chike Obinna Chiejina et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of the antipsychotic drug haloperidol on juvenile Clarias gariepinus. It found that exposure to the drug led to changes in hematological and biochemical parameters in the fish, including reduced red blood cell count and increased neutrophil count. However, these effects dissipated after 5 days of drug withdrawal.

Effects of Environmentally Relevant Concentrations of Antipsychotic Drugs (Sulpiride and Clozapine) on Serotonergic and Dopaminergic Neurotransmitter Systems in Octopus Brain Tissue

Xijian Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of the antipsychotic drugs sulpiride and clozapine on the dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems in the brain of Octopus ochellatus. The results showed that these drugs interfere with the dopamine and serotonin signaling pathways in the brain, leading to dose-dependent adverse reactions and posing a serious threat to the health of Octopus ochellatus.

Neuroactive drugs and other pharmaceuticals found in blood plasma of wild European fish

Daniel Cerveny et al.

Summary: Through analyzing the plasma of wild fish from multiple countries, it was found that some pharmaceuticals exceeded 10% of the therapeutic plasma concentration in fish, including drugs that target the central nervous system like flupentixol, haloperidol, and risperidone. This not only highlights pharmaceuticals of environmental concern, but also emphasizes the importance of monitoring internal drug levels in aquatic wildlife.

Distortion of micronuclei and other peripheral erythrocytes caused by fenitrothion and their recovery assemblage in zebrafish

Mt. Marufa Khatun et al.

Summary: The experiment revealed that fenitrothion induced significantly higher prevalence and severity of erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities and erythrocytic cellular abnormalities in zebrafish. However, post-exposure recuperation showed spontaneous recovery of abnormalities in all treatments, indicating the potential for detecting aquatic animals' sensitivity to environmental pollution.
