A novel B-Si-Zr hybridized ceramizable phenolic resin and the thermal insulation properties of its fiber-reinforced composites

Yi Xin et al.

Summary: A novel B-Si-Zr hybridized ceramicizable resin(BSZ-PR) was successfully fabricated by chemical reaction of boric acid, zirconium hydroxyl-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(Zr-POSS) and phenolic. The incorporation of boric acid and Zr-POSS improved the thermal stability of the resin effectively, and the flexural strength of carbon fiber/BSZ-PR and high silica fiber/BSZ-PR composites were increased significantly. Formation of ceramic structures such as SiO2, ZrO2 and SiC at high temperatures and extreme ablative conditions from BSZ-PR and its composites may be the key to the improved thermal, ablative properties.

Two birds with one stone: Construction of bifunctional-POSS hybridized boron-silicon ceramicized phenolic composites and its ablation behavior

Zhaoqi Niu et al.

Summary: In this study, a bifunctional alkalic heptaphenyltrisilanol sodium salt polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane was used to catalyze the synthesis of boron phenolic resin and achieve boron-silicon hybrid phenolic resin (BPOSSPR) with excellent ablative resistance. The CF/BPOSSPR and HSF/BPOSSPR composites showed significantly improved mechanical and thermal insulation properties. The mechanism of ablation resistance in BPOSSPR composites is attributed to the formation of ceramic thermal barrier layers under high temperature conditions, such as B2O3, SiO2, borosilicate glass, SiC.

Maurizio Natali et al.

Summary: Carbon/Phenolic Composites (CPCs) are important TPS materials. Characterizing their thermo-physical and thermo-mechanical properties is crucial, but most existing studies rely on outdated testing facilities and specialized equipment. This paper aims to identify a feasible approach using common DSC and TGA analysis to assess the heat capacity of CPCs as a function of temperature (up to 550 degrees C), considering the degradation steps of the polymeric matrix.

Summary: In this study, boron-phenolic resin (BPR) composites were modified with various loadings of mesophase pitch (MP) to improve their mechanical performance, ablation resistance, and thermal insulation properties. The introduction of MP effectively prevented the growth of microcracks and increased the proportion of micropores and graphitic structures in the residual char, resulting in improved ablation and insulation properties of the composites.

Pressure-Strengthened Carbon Fibers from Mesophase PitchCarbonization Processes

Yanzhuo Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of pressure enhancement on the graphitization of mesophase pitch and the tensile stress of carbon fibers produced. The results show that under isotropic compressing pressure, the tensile stress of the produced fibers can increase by 3.7-11 times. Experimental results demonstrate that pressurized laser-processed mesophase pitch generates less gas and shows more ordered carbonized structures. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism of carbon fiber production under pressure and introduces a promising method for manufacturing mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers with exceptional mechanical properties.

High Temperature Composites From Renewable Resources: A Perspective on Current Technological Challenges for the Manufacturing of Non-Oil Based High Char Yield Matrices and Carbon Fibers

Maurizio Natali et al.

Summary: In recent years, a wide range of high temperature materials have been developed for use as Thermal Protection Systems (TPS). Graphite, a carbon-based material, has been widely used as a TPS material but it has limitations in terms of mechanical properties and resistance to thermal shocks. To overcome these limitations, carbon fibers are introduced into a carbon matrix to produce Carbon/Carbon Composites (CCCs). In addition, research has been conducted on alternative matrices such as phenolic resins, cyanate esters, bismaleimides, and benzoxazines in combination with carbon fibers. This paper provides a review of the current challenges in manufacturing high char yield matrices and carbon fibers derived from alternative precursors. The possibility of producing carbon fibers from precursors other than PAN, Rayon, and Pitch, as well as non-oil based phenolics, bismaleimides, cyanate esters, and benzoxazines, is discussed.
