New insights into the cocatalyst-free carbonation of vegetable oil derivatives using heterogeneous catalysts

Wander Y. Perez-Sena et al.

Summary: Cyclic carbonates are important platform molecules with various industrial applications. There have been limited studies on fully heterogeneous catalysts for the carbonation of epoxidized vegetable oils. This study investigated the carbonation of epoxidized methyl oleate using different heterogeneous catalysts, and found that catalysts supported on mesoporous materials showed improved catalytic performance.

Aquivion perfluorosulfonic superacid as an effective catalyst for selective epoxidation of vegetable oils

Riccardo Polese et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous acid catalysts, including various acidic ion exchange resins, were utilized to study the acid-promoted epoxidation of vegetable oils. The more efficient catalyst and experimental conditions were identified to achieve quantitative and selective epoxidation of different types of vegetable oils with varying compositions of saturated, mono-, di-, and tri-unsaturated fatty acids. The optimized reaction conditions were successfully applied to the epoxidation of waste cooking oil, contributing to the valorization of biowaste in a sustainable society. The use of quantitative HNMR-H-1 facilitated accurate evaluation of reagent amounts, selectivity, and quantification of mono-, di-, and tri-epoxides, providing insights into the fatty acid composition of vegetable oils even with low quantities of linolenic acid present.

Two antagonistic effects of flow/mixing on reactive polymer blending

Wei-Yun Ji et al.

Summary: This study reveals that in reactive polymer blending, flow/mixing can both promote copolymer formation by creating interfaces and enhance collisions between reactive groups, as well as potentially pull the copolymer out of the interfaces and migrate it to one of the two polymer components of the blend, reducing its compatibilization efficiency.

Enhanced and Reusable Poly(hydroxy urethane)-Based Low Temperature Hot-Melt Adhesives

Alvaro Gomez-Lopez et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential of Poly(hydroxy urethane)s (PHUs) based on 5-membered cyclic carbonates as reversible hot-melt adhesives is discussed. The researchers found that by choosing suitable reagents, they were able to improve the properties of PHUs. By adding different types of diamines, they discovered materials with hot-melt adhesive properties. Through rebonding tests and material analysis, the authors demonstrated the thermoreversibility of these materials and the breaking and reformation of hydrogen bonding interactions. To enhance the performance of low molar mass PHUs, the researchers also prepared hybrid PHUs.

Crosslinked isocyanate-free poly(hydroxy urethane)s - Poly(butyl methacrylate) hybrid latexes

Boris Bizet et al.

Summary: The waterborne isocyanate-free grafted poly(hydroxy urethane)-poly(butyl methacrylate) hybrid dispersions were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization, with the grafting induced by methacrylate functionalities in the poly(hydroxy urethane) and controlled by the degree of functionalization. It was found that grafting allowed for fine tuning of the mechanical properties of the PHU-containing hybrids.

Hydrolytic stability of polyurethane/polyhydroxyurethane hybrid adhesives

Soilikki Kotanen et al.

Summary: Polyurethane/polyhydroxyurethane (PU/PHU) hybrid materials show potential as alternatives to PU adhesives with good mechanical and adhesive properties, but are susceptible to water uptake leading to potential bond failure. After water immersion, cohesive strength of PU/PHU increases while adhesive strength decreases, requiring careful application design for optimal usage.
