Facile fabrication of polyethyleneimine interlayer-assisted graphene oxide incorporated reverse osmosis membranes for water desalination

Zhi Chien Ng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel interlayer-assisted interfacial polymerization technique with the inclusion of graphene oxide (GO) was used to improve the permeability/selectivity trade-off, chlorine attack, and fouling issues of reverse osmosis membranes. The results showed that the PEI-interlayered thin film composite (iTFC) membrane exhibited higher pure water permeance and NaCl rejection compared to the conventional TFC (cTFC) membrane. The inclusion of 0.01 wt/v% GO further enhanced the performance of the iTFC membrane, producing a PEI-interlayered thin film nanocomposite (iTFN-10) membrane with greater pure water permeance without compromising rejection. The iTFN-10 membrane also demonstrated better antifouling and antibacterial properties compared to commercial membranes.

In situ green synthesis of cellulose nanocomposite films incorporated with silver/silver chloride particles: characterization and antibacterial performance

Mozhgan Bagheri et al.

Summary: Ag/AgCl@cellulose nanocomposites were successfully fabricated using microwave-assisted ionic liquid method. The composite films exhibited cube-like Ag/AgCl particles distributed uniformly within the cellulose matrix. Localized surface plasmon resonance was observed in the composite films, indicating the formation of silver nanoregions on the silver chloride particle surface. The nanocomposite films showed significant antibacterial activity against various bacterial strains.

An overview on nanoparticles used in biomedicine and their cytotoxicity

Mohammad Nikzamir et al.

Summary: Nanotechnology involves developing engineered nanoparticles for biomedical applications, which have unique physicochemical properties but can exhibit cytotoxicity causing concerns for clinical applications. To be successful in biomedical applications, nanoparticles must be non-toxic and biocompatible, as their small size allows them to easily enter the body and potentially reach sensitive organs. The cytotoxicity of nanoparticles depends on various factors such as size, shape, charge, chemistry, and modifications, with the main mechanism being the generation of reactive oxygen species leading to oxidative stress and cell damage. Various commonly used nanoparticles in biomedicine, including carbon-based nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, and quantum dots, are discussed along with their possible cytotoxicity mechanisms.

Model for Gold Nanoparticle Synthesis: Effect of pH and Reaction Time

Saeed Yazdani et al.

Summary: The synthesis of gold nanoparticles relies on the concentration of trisodium citrate dihydrate and the interaction time with tetrachloroauric acid, enabling the production of gold nanoparticles with diverse sizes and dispersity through control variables. The chemical reactions between trisodium citrate dihydrate and tetrachloroauric acid lead to a slight decrease in pH throughout the synthesis process. The nucleation of gold nanoparticles causes pH fluctuation over time, with a negative correlation between pH and reaction time demonstrated at different ratios of trisodium citrate dihydrate to tetrachloroauric acid.
