Study on electroactive shape memory behaviors of polyvinyl alcohol/waterborne polyurethane/short carbon fiber composites

Liulan Lin et al.

Summary: The addition of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) effectively enhanced the elongation property and reduced the glass transition temperature of the composite. However, it slightly decreased the shape fixity ratio and the shape recovery ratio with increasing WPU content. The composites doubled their elongation at break with a maximum WPU content of 50%, showing potential application in the field of soft robotics through the design of a reciprocating deformable robot without additional materials.

Molecular Alignment of a Meta-Aramid on Carbon Nanotubes by In Situ Interfacial Polymerization

Cecile A. C. Chazot et al.

Summary: Molecularly organized nanocomposites of polymers and carbon nanotubes show great promise as high-performance materials. However, achieving controllable interaction between the polymer and carbon nanotubes remains a challenge. In this study, the researchers successfully coated carbon nanotubes with a conformal coating of meta-aramid, providing insights for future investigation of the mechanical properties of these composites and the application of in situ polymerization to other substrates.

Mechanistic study of pH effect on organic solvent nanofiltration using carboxylated covalent organic framework as a modeling and experimental platform

Phuoc H. H. Duong et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of pH on organic solvent nanofiltration using a carboxylated COF membrane. pH changes were found to dramatically affect solvent permeance, solute rejection, solute solvation layer thicknesses, and C-COF pore charges, leading to significant changes in selectivity. This suggests that feed solution pH can be controlled to modify solvated solute radii and surface charge, thereby influencing the selectivity of COF membranes in OSN processes.

4D Biofabrication Using a Combination of 3D Printing and Melt-Electrowriting of Shape-Morphing Polymers

Gissela Constante et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the fabrication of scroll-like scaffolds with anisotropic topography using 4D printing techniques by combining 3D extrusion printing and melt-electrowriting. Shape-morphing technology allows efficient alignment of cells within the scaffold, with factors such as calcium ion concentration, environmental media, and scaffold geometry influencing the shape-morphing process. Additionally, the inclusion of PCL fibers in the scaffold generates a patterned surface that enables a high degree of cell orientation, which is not achievable on the alginate layer without fibers.

Computational development and validation of a representative MDI-BDO-based polyurethane hard segment model

Baggya Karunarathna et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the structural and chemical properties of MDI-BDO hard segments in polyurethanes. It was found that the trans isomer of urethane bond is more stable than the cis isomer, with calculated IR spectra and Fukui indices providing powerful differentiation tools. Additionally, intramolecular and intermolecular π-stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions between hard segments were observed.
