Effect of crystal structure on nanofiber morphology and chemical modification; design of CeO2/PVDF membrane

Adam Verner et al.

Summary: Layered crystal structures form flat platelet-like crystallites, and nanofibers with such structures exhibit strip-like morphology. In this study, PVDF nanofibers were prepared with strip-like morphology and longitudinal folding, and surface-modified with CeO2 nanoparticles. Molecular modeling showed that the dominant PVDF(100) plane is suitable for anchoring the CeO2 nanoparticles. Preferred crystallographic orientations of the anchored CeO2 nanoparticles were also revealed. This successful surface modification provides potential applications for the CeO2/PVDF membrane.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based film with strong antimicrobial activity

Dong Je Han et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial PVDF-based polymers were prepared by grafting quaternary ammonium or quaternary pyridinium monomers to effectively kill bacteria and yeast. Adding these polymers to PVDF films through blending method enhanced both mechanical properties and antimicrobial performances, while maintaining biocompatibility.

In situ monitoring of the influence of water on DNA radiation damage by near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Marc Benjamin Hahn et al.

Summary: Ionizing radiation damage to DNA plays a fundamental role in cancer therapy, and water radiolysis effects are important to consider. Near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy is used to directly measure DNA damage during irradiation in water, revealing a significant increase in base damage and base release compared to irradiation in a dry atmosphere.
