Polyimide Films Manufactured Using Partially Wet Electrospray Deposition

Bryce J. Kingsley et al.

Summary: In electrospray deposition, solute material is atomized into microdroplets and dispersed in a carrier solvent. The rate of solvent evaporation determines the deposition regime, which can be dry or partially wet. This study compares the microstructure and functional characteristics of films deposited in both regimes using polyimide as the solute material. Numerical modeling shows that solution flow rate and freestream vapor concentration have dominant effects on the deposition regime. Partially wet ESD films have higher dielectric strength and optical transparency compared to dry ESD films, while both provide comparable corrosion resistance.

In-Air Polymerization and Crosslinking of Monomers During Electrospray Deposition

Catherine J. Nachtigal et al.

Summary: Electrospray deposition (ESD) is a coating technique that can create nanostructured self-limiting electrospray deposition (SLED) coatings with certain solutions, but it uses a large amount of solvent, leading to long deposition times. By spraying monomers with a photoactivated polymerizing agent, it is possible to reduce solvent usage and form oligomeric polymer films.

Smart Coatings Prepared via MAPLE Deposition of Polymer Nanocapsules for Light-Induced Release

Valentina Marturano et al.

Summary: This study presents smart coatings based on photo-responsive polymer nanocapsules deposited by laser evaporation, combining controllable release and high encapsulation efficiency. The Matrix-Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) technique showed versatility and performance in fabricating these coatings with remarkable adhesion achieved. Thyme oil and coumarin 6 release experiments demonstrated the potential of MAPLE for creating photo-responsive coatings on various substrates.

Electrospray Printing of Polyimide Films Using Passive Material Focusing

Bryce J. Kingsley et al.

Summary: In electrospray printing, a high electric potential is used to atomize liquid solution and print onto a target substrate. The use of a passive electrostatic funnel helps focus the print material, though it also results in material deflection from the target; furthermore, the distance from the emitter to the target substrate is a key print parameter affecting film growth rates.
