Piezostrain-controlled magnetization compensation temperature in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloy films

Junshuai Wang et al.

Summary: The electrical control of magnetization compensation temperature (Tcom) in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloy deposited on ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-30%PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) is investigated. It is found that the applied electric field can cause a 19 K shift in Tcom, which is induced by piezostrain at the ferroelectric-ferrimagnetic interface. The change of exchange coupling strength in GdFeCo is caused by lattice strains according to spin-polarized first-principles calculations. Nonvolatile switching of resistance and direct bipolar control of exchange bias are achieved by applying an electric field to appropriately designed multilayers. These findings pave the way for electric field control of Tcom in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloy and have implications for the development of energy efficient and nonvolatile ferrimagnetic magnetic random access memory.

Picosecond optospintronic tunnel junctions

Luding Wang et al.

Summary: Researchers report an optospintronic tunnel junction (OTJ) device with a picosecond switching speed, ultralow power consumption, high magnetoresistance ratio, and nonvolatility. The device allows all-optical writing within 10 ps and shows reliable resistance readout with a relatively high tunnel magnetoresistance. The OTJ has potential for scaling toward the nanoscale and could pave the way for a new category of integrated spintronic-photonic memory devices.

Control of magnetoelastic coupling in Ni/Fe multilayers using He+ ion irradiation

G. Masciocchi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of post-growth He+ irradiation on the magneto-elastic properties of a Ni/Fe multi-layered stack. It is found that He+ irradiation causes progressive intermixing at the interfaces of the multilayer, allowing for tuning of the saturation magnetostriction value and even reversal of the sign of the magnetostrictive effect. The study also identifies the critical fluence at which the absolute value of the magnetostriction is significantly reduced, achieving insensitivity to strain in the magnetic stack.

All-optical switching of magnetization in atomically thin CrI3

Peiyao Zhang et al.

Summary: The authors successfully demonstrated all-optical magnetization switching in an atomically thin ferromagnetic semiconductor using circularly polarized light pulses. The switching process is related to the transfer of spin angular momentum from photoexcited carriers to local magnetic moments. This research is important as it explores the possibility of controlling magnetism using light, which has potential applications in high-speed and low-power spintronic devices.

Strain-controlled domain wall injection into nanowires for sensor applications

Giovanni Masciocchi et al.

Summary: Strain was found to increase the injection field of domain walls and the switching mechanism was strongly influenced by the strain direction. Low magnetic anisotropy facilitates the creation of domain walls, while strain-induced magnetic easy axis significantly increases the coercive field of the nucleation pad, which can be counteracted by an additional magnetic uniaxial anisotropy perpendicular to the strain-induced easy axis.

Strain-induced modulation of temperature characteristics in ferrimagnetic Tb-Fe films

Shinya Ota et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the compensation temperature of ferrimagnetic Tb-Fe films on a flexible substrate is significantly affected by tensile strain, resulting in a reduction of magnetic moments of both Fe and Tb. Analyzed using molecular field theory, the changes in exchange coupling between Fe and Tb atoms are speculated to be the cause of this phenomenon.
