Photothermally induced temperature variations in a low-absorption sample via backside absorption

V. V. Miletic et al.

Summary: To detect the photothermal effect in a sample with low optical absorption, an optically opaque layer needs to be applied on its surface. A model is derived for optically induced temperature variations in this structure, considering a thin coating on the non-illuminated side of the sample and neglecting heat dissipation in the coating. The model is validated by comparing with results from a two-layer structure model. The influence of optical absorption on surface temperature variations in both transparent and semi-transparent films, regardless of their thermal conductivity, is analyzed. It is shown that the effects of optical absorption can be observed through temperature measurements, even for low absorbance samples.

Si plate radius influence on the photoacoustic signal processed by neural networks

Katarina Lj. Djordjevic et al.

Summary: The effect of sample radius on the prediction accuracy of neural networks trained with undistorted and distorted signals is analyzed in this study. It is found that the networks trained with both undistorted and distorted signals perform best for sample radii between 2 and 3 mm, close to the microphone aperture radius of 1.5 mm. For sample radii comparable to the microphone dimensions, the network trained only with undistorted signals gives the best results. These findings highlight the importance of using slightly larger samples than the microphone aperture in experiments.

Heat Transport on Ultrashort Time and Space Scales in Nanosized Systems: Diffusive or Wave-like?

S. L. Sobolev et al.

Summary: The non-Fourier effects in nanosized systems, such as wave-like temperature propagation and boundary temperature jumps, are a result of the multiple time and space scales nature of out-of-equilibrium heat transport. The relaxation to equilibrium occurs in different scales due to couplings between different excitations with different physical meanings. By using a hierarchy of partial differential equations, we describe the out-of-equilibrium temperature evolution that includes both diffusive and wave modes of heat transport. We also identify the critical conditions for transitioning from wave to diffusive modes and compare our approach with other non-Fourier models.

Causality in non-fourier heat conduction

A. Camacho de la Rosa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the causal response of non-Fourier heat conduction by introducing a dispersive generalized thermal susceptibility and demonstrates its adherence to Kramers-Kronig relations. Specifically, the Cattaneo-Vernotte and the dual-phase lag models are discussed. The constitutive equations are formulated as a linear response theory to determine the conditions under which the dual-phase lag model fails to satisfy Kramers-Kronig relations. An alternative model is proposed to describe non-Fourier transport, leveraging the similarity with the causal response of viscoelastic materials to overcome this unphysical issue.

Optically induced temperature variations in a two-layer volume absorber including thermal memory effects

M. N. Popovic et al.

Summary: This study derived a theoretical model of temperature variations for a two-layer optically absorbing structure, taking into account thermal memory effects. The model considers both layers as volume absorbers of the incident light and accounts for the thermal memory properties of both layers. The model provides expressions for surface temperature variations and is particularly relevant for understanding the photothermal and photoacoustic response in experiments.
