Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Symmetry on Evaporation Triggered Elastocapillary Top-Gathering of High Aspect Ratio Micropillars

Farshad Barghi Golezani et al.

Summary: High-aspect-ratio (HAR) micropillar arrays have various applications due to their large surface area and excellent mechanical compliance. However, they are prone to lateral deflection by elastocapillary forces in liquid environments, limiting their manufacturing processes and applications. This study numerically investigated the impact of symmetry on evaporation triggered top-gathering of micropillars, and suggested a new equation for calculating micropillar deflection due to elastocapillary forces. The study also explored the effect of droplet evaporation on micropillar deflection/top-gathering.

Preventing the Capillary-Induced Collapse of Vertical Nanostructures

Tanmay Ghosh et al.

Summary: The fabrication of densely packed high-aspect-ratio (HAR) vertical semiconductor nanostructures faces challenges such as pattern collapse induced by capillary forces. A solution-phase deposition method using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has been demonstrated to greatly reduce pattern collapse in vertical silicon (Si) nanopillars, providing an effective way to prevent drying-induced collapse in micro- and nanofabrication processes.

A self-adhesion criterion for slanted micropillars

Albert Kong et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors propose a solution to the limitation of self-adhesion in micropillar arrays by designing slanted micropillars. The study shows that slanting the micropillars can increase their packing and length, but excessive slanting results in a decrease. Slanted micropillars also improve the orthogonal compliance and enhance the adhesive strength of fibrillar adhesives.

Customizable and highly sensitive 3D micro-springs produced by two-photon polymerizations with improved post-treatment processes

Xinggang Shang et al.

Summary: This study presents the design and manufacturing of triple-helix-shaped micro-springs using two-photon polymerization technology. The mechanical properties, particularly the spring constant, were systematically studied. The results show that the spring constant can be actively tuned over a wide range while maintaining high resolution and agreement.

Challenges and limits of mechanical stability in 3D direct laser writing

Elaheh Sedghamiz et al.

Summary: Direct laser writing is an effective technique for fabricating complex 3D polymer networks using ultrashort laser pulses, but obtaining a time-resolved microscopic picture of the printing process in operando remains a challenge. In this study, a molecular dynamics simulation approach is used to model direct laser writing and investigate the effect of writing condition and aspect ratio on the mechanical properties of the printed polymer network.

Dimension and process effects on the mechanical stability of ultra-small HSQ nanopillars

Pei Zeng et al.

Summary: The demand for smaller devices is increasing with the growth of the semiconductor industry, and high-resolution patterning is essential for fabricating ultra-small nano-structures. However, hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ), a high-resolution negative-tone electron-beam resist, often suffers from collapse and displacement after exposure. Understanding the stability behavior of HSQ nanostructures is crucial for reliable fabrication of various nanodevices.
